The best example of our team improving via a waiver wire signing was that of Laurent Robinson a few years back. If I'm not mistaken, our finding this gem in waivers was the result of Jerry's relationship with Norv Turner who called and said he was going to have to cut a very good receiver. Robinson made a big impact in his short time here. I was sorry to see him go. However, this post isn't about re-signing him. At this point that would not make sense with his concussion history. This post is about how to help the team via waiver signings.
It seems you can find waiver gems when another team is overloaded with talent at a position and must let someone go, and we're up on the situation. It seems it's extremely important to be up on what's going on in other teams' training camps.
Any time a player gets cut from someone's camp, it's because that team's coach has other players he wants more. Many of the cut players aren't good enough for the NFL, but certain ones are and can help your team be better. It would also be easy to end up signing garbage via desperation. The Sean Lee situation comes to mind. I hope we can find someone to help fill his void and be smart about it without making some desperate reach that will end up hurting the team.
I'm interested on comments from others who know about this subject. I've never worked for any NFL team, but I suspect sorting through the waiver wire and deciding who to take a chance on is one of the more difficult aspects of the job.
