Cunningham fined $5,000 by the NFL
Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham declined comment Wednesday on a picture that appears to show him making an obscene gesture during the Chiefs' game last week at Dallas.

The picture shows Cunningham on the Chiefs' sideline facing the field and making the gesture, apparently near the end of the Cowboys' 31-28 victory. It's been all over the Internet and appeared on at least one Kansas City television station.

Cunningham has been fined $5,000 by the NFL for the obscene gesture.

A team spokesman said Cunningham would have nothing to say on the matter. But head coach Dick Vermeil said the two had discussed it.

"But not in any serious discussion," Vermeil said. "He made a mistake, and that happens."

Vermeil, a former broadcaster, said he's seen others make the same gesture.

"I tell you this - I have seen that sign of peace in a national broadcast by an NCAA college football player. That's a sign of frustration more than anything else. And sometimes they deserve it."

Cunningham has long been known for a fiery passion that produces great loyalty among his players.

"We all should demonstrate more professional poise and [Cunningham] would tell you the same thing," Vermeil told reporters.

"But in the heat of the battle, sometimes when you're an intense, passionate guy like he is and other people are ... I don't know how many of you have ever put yourself in that kind of environment to know what finger you might wave. I talked to him about it but not in a reprimanding way."

Vermeil said Cunningham had not contacted the league office on the matter. "Why should he? I don't consider it a big deal."

Someone had a screen grab earlier in the week of the "incident". I can't seem to locate it, though.

Oh my goodness... I am so offended. Oh, my eyes! I've never seen such blatant vulgarness...

The NFL really needs to lighten up. Geeze...

I'm no fuddy duddy or anything but if you allow coaches in the NFL to start flippin' the refs off........well, that's a classless league.

Where do you draw the line once you start allowing such a thing to go on?

Disagree with you here. Ya have to fine this type of thing whether you individually are offended or not is irrelevant.

Vermeil's discussion with him was, "Yeah the ref's Di***d us on that one; don't worry about it we'll give you a 5K bonus to cover it."
