Anyone know the cap hit if we release Henry?

Guys:

Just a little puzzled over trade of Henry. Possible reason: We wanted to release him and avoid a Cap hit at the same time.

Does anyone know what the cap hit would have been to just release Henry?

Note: by obtaining Kitna via trade it prevents him from becoming a free agent and possibly (maybe) driving up the price.

There wasn't a cap hit - I think the number saved was around 3 million. Now, with the trade - we have a legit backup QB and still saved around 1 mil.

So we basically signed a backup for around $2,000,000 and released Henry.

These might be off, because Stephen Jones ( aka Adam) - I am not :)

You missed the point. The question is: Did Henry get a signing bonus so there would be a cap hit in dead money if we just released him?

There is no difference between trading him or releasing as it pertains to the cap. The hit would have been identical.

The cap hit of trading him or releasing him was the same right now because he was in the last yr o his deal. He was due a roster bonus I believe but not for a week or so.

Henry did get a signing bonus when we originally got him.

Whatever the savings we saved money getting him out of here and we got a far better backup QB than the one we had, or the one we would have had with Kyle Boller in here, to replace him with. So I'm not upset, in any fashion, but the move.

The cap hit for Henry was the same as if we cut him before June 1st(I believe) when his roster bonus was due.

BUT... Kitna restructured his deal to take less money so he only costs us 1.95 mil this year.

Dallas and Detroit got guys liked short-term but didn't wanna pay a lot for. So by avoiding having to cut guys and just go open market they made a swap that makes a great deal of sense for both teams imho.

Teams can and will make mistakes but I think more times than not I'll lean to the scouts, coaches and GMs over fans and media.

From a Dallas standpoint if they cut Henry and sign a backup QB it probably cost them about 4 to 5 mil in Signing Bonus. Unless they went really low shelf and signed a guy after most of the market had dried up.
