Anyone question Peterson's toughness?

I know some were questioning whether Adrian Peterson could avoid the injury bug once he got to the NFL. I like the guy, but he may have a little Julius Jones in him.

Vikings RB Peterson leaves practice with hip pointer

MANKATO, Minn. (Aug. 2, 2007) -- Minnesota Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson left Thursday's practice with an injury after taking an elbow to his hip while catching a pass in a drill, but he said it wasn't serious.

"It's not a big deal at all," said Peterson, who called the injury a minor hip pointer.

Peterson missed the first five practices of training camp before signing a five-year, $40.5 million contract that includes $17 million guaranteed. His status is day to day, but he's unlikely to participate in weekend scrimmages against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Backfield mate Chester Taylor is also not expected to suit up against the Chiefs. He has been bothered this week by a bruised forearm.

Though left tackle Bryant McKinnie was activated from the non-football injury list after sitting out with a strained hamstring, the Vikings have had their share of minor injuries during the first week of camp.

Cornerback Ronyell Whitaker, who is competing for a backup spot, was carted off from Thursday's practice after spraining his ankle. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said it wasn't serious.

I don't think that will be the case. I expect Peterson to be a real work horse in the NFL the guy has outstanding talent and can run around or over people.

Refresh my memory but I think after the "tapping incident" that Julius played tough from there on out. I forget the injury that sidelined him for much of his rookie year but didn't he actually stay on the field too long after incurring that to try to show BP he could play through pain? That's my recollection anyway.

I think BP ignored JJ's tapping his helmet for breather but yeah, JJ kept practicing with that injury.

guys in the NFL are bigger, faster and hit harder than the college guys he played against...if he couldnt stay healthy then its not out there to think he's going to struggle to stay healthy now

he runs pretty upright...thats kind of style usually doesnt last long in the NFL

I don't question his toughness, because he played on that high ankle sprain, and those are painful. But I do question his durability. He's a bit slight and angular to be trying to run over everyone like he tried to do in college.

I don't know. I loved Peterson his freshman year, but I gradually became less and less sold on him. But on the other hand, the RB position as a whole isn't as strong as it once was, IMO. So maybe Peterson will look pretty good relative to the other backs in the league.

There have been some RB that had no problem with that running style. Peterson injuries have been legit and he has played through a lot of the injuries when maybe OU should have taken him out of the games. I would also add injuries can happen to any player at any time and I don't think Peterson is some fragile player who can't take a hit. This report is he had a minor hip pointer which are very painful but it will not present a problem. The final prove will be what he does at this level and myself I’m pretty confident Peterson will have a much bigger impact on the game than say Ju Jones.

He's very tough. I'm sure if it was a game he'd have played through it.

Hip pointers aren't going to keep him from succeeding... if injuries are going to hamper his career, it'll have to be more serious than that.

The other thing with Peterson running style it had nothing to do with the injuries he had. The high ankle sprain took place when his foot got rolled up on and the broken collar bone happened when diving to the goal line and he landed wrong on it. None of that has anything to do with his upright running.

Toughness & durability are two different things imo.

Toughness I call the willingness to play through pain. Its within the control of the player.

Durability is the bodies resistance to injury. Training & diet aside, it is considered outside the players control.

A player can choose to play with sore ribs if he can endure the pain.

The same player cannot realistically play with a broken leg as its function is compromised no matter the players tolerance for associated pain.

Julius was tough enough to stay in the game after he broke his scapula (I believe). The fact that he has missed several games with this broke bone once brings his durability into question, but not his toughness imo.

I agree. I chose the wrong word when I used toughness. Durability is a better term. I question that part for Peterson. We shall see. I don't question his talent. The only comparison with Julius Jones I meant to make was on durability. He is way more talented than Jones.

Well yes then, I do question his durability. :p:

Honestly I don't know how you couldn't at least "question" it.

he can be - but unfortunately he's also hurt a lot. both are cold hard facts and we'll see if both continue or if one or the other takes over.

He was not hurt a lot, I would consider being hurt a lot is many different injuries. He has missed time and his play has been affected by a couple of injuries. High ankle sprain and the broken collar bone

Despite injury problems in his three seasons at Oklahoma (dislocated left shoulder, right high ankle sprain, broken right clavicle), Peterson became the first player in school history to eclipse 3,000 rushing yards in two seasons. He ranks second in school history with 747 rushing attempts (sixth in Big Twelve Conference annals), third with 4,045 rushing yards (fifth in conference history) and fourth with 41 touchdowns rushing. His 4,401 all-purpose yards are third on Oklahoma's all-time record list.

like i said - he's phenonimal when on the field, but he's not there that often due to injuries. maybe it's me but 3 injuries in 3 years isn't a good sign.

how many injuries did emmitt have in all his NFL years?

TO sat out because his hammy was sore. Last year he missed 3 pre-season games because his hammy was sore. Do you think this scimmage is that important that Minn wants to have peterson out there with the mild hip pointer?
