It appears that GM and coaches all become focused on the deficiencies of the team (needs), they overlook or make themselves overlook the obvious (BPA).

I am worried that we are so focused on RB that we forget to pick the best player during our selection like these GMs did.

If teams would draft with the idea that they won't have the player until the following season, many mistakes would be prevented.

In the 2015 draft, just draft assuming the players won't play the 2015 season.

This takes need out of focus.

The other mistake is believing that you will get the player you want at "value" instead of just picking him slightly early. This is typical of GM thinking he's smarter than others then is shocked when his player gets plucked from right in front of him.

Cowboys, 2009, Max Unger

They could have traded all of their other picks to move up and get their top target and would have had a much better draft.

Good news is the team has seemed to have learned this lesson. Fans...not so much.

Agreed. We want "value".

The real value is getting a productive player for your team that stays on the team regardless of which round they were selected.

I think we get too hung up on all this "value" stuff. It's easy to say you could have gotten a certain player later in the draft, but nobody really knows. Two years ago, people were going crazy that we took Fred at the end of round 1, thinking for sure he would still be there in the second. Maybe, maybe not. At this point, you just want guys who can play, regardless of where you take them. You take a guy earlier that most think he should go, but he plays great for you. Then you get a guy a round or two later than most thought, and he ends up not being very good.

people who whine about value are basically stupid. All that matters is does this player produce for you. Nothing else really does. Now there is a difference between this non existent 'value' and reaching. Reaching to me is taking a guy a round earlier then you have him rated at. that rarely ends well since if you do reach you have fallen in love with that player and can overlook defects.
