When reports emerged that Vikings running back Adrian Peterson missed practice and traveled to South Dakota due to a “medical issue involving [a] young family member that likely will be a police matter,” several tipsters linked the news to reports from Sioux Falls of a man named Robert Joseph Patterson charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant, who is in critical condition.

TMZ reports that the link indeed exists, and that Peterson’s two-year-old son is in critical condition after being severely beaten, allegedly by Patterson.

Report: Peterson returns to at team facility
We’ve reported that he is dealing with a “tragic” personal situation. A source close to Peterson has declined to disclose any details, explaining that Peterson will address the situation at the appropriate time. According to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Peterson has returned to the team facility.

It’s possible Peterson will speak to the media or release a statement later today, regarding the situation and/or his plans for the upcoming weekend, when the Vikings host the Panthers.

Again, we still don’t know what the specific circumstances are. TMZ has reported that Peterson’s two-year-old son is in critical condition, and that a man has been charged with severely beating the boy. Until those facts are confirmed, they should not be regarded as 100 percent true.

I was doing some research on this fella. He has a rap sheet a mile long dealing with domestic violence, here's some highlights

• Patterson has a son with another Sioux Falls woman, court records show. Records also show that the mother of his child had asked for protection orders twice, claiming he’d choked and punched her, threatened her with a knife and held her in the bedroom against her will.
  The mother chose not to pursue permanent protection orders were ultimately were dropped voluntarily in 2010 and 2011.
  
• In 2012, Patterson was charged with simple assault against the mother, however, and was ordered to undergo family violence training and to stay away from her until completing it
  
• Another woman applied for a protection order against Patterson in 2004 in Jackson County, where he attended high school.

Add in the fact this irresponsible woman left her 2 year old son in the care of a man who the Police Chief said she hardly knew, it was a fairly new relationship

Again, bad judgement shouldn't get you arrested. If she knew this dude was this dangerous and still allowed contact like that, then negligence is a possibility.

Yeah, I've just seen that. Right now, there's some misinformation, but I'll update the thread title to reflect the new info.

RT @BlogAndTackle TMZ now says: "the injured child is Adrian's son, but not Adrian Peterson Jr."

My theory is that this son is someone who has just come to light. ******** is calling it a secret son. But from what I gather is AP and the young lady had relations. A son came soon after, but was not publicly announced. AP's father referred to the little boy as his grandson, so that solidifies it for me.

So sad that the mother of his son is not the love of his life, .. and at their home taking care of their son.

Instead she is some tramp that is sleeping with some guy with a criminal record and was stupid enough to leave him alone with the creep.

Men need to stop having babies and not sticking around to help raise them.

In a brief phone interview with the Pioneer Press, Nelson Peterson said the injured boy is not Adrian Jr., but is a grandson.

"All I can say is, we are asking for prayers and for respect for our family as we deal with this tragic situation," Nelson Peterson said.

Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault and battery of an infant, according to Lincoln County Attorney Thomas Wollman.
Patterson could face up to 40 years in prison, according to Wollman.
