Commanders rework Brunell's contract

By JOSEPH WHITE

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- The Washington Commanders finished restructuring Mark Brunell's contract Wednesday, creating more space under the salary cap while ensuring he will return to the team next season.

The team also re-signed offensive lineman Mike Pucillo and released tight end Christian Fauria.

The moves were part of a furious final push to prepare the Commanders for the start of free agency Friday, when the team is expected to begin its yearly aggressive courtship of top players to fill its needs. The team has been talking to several veterans about renegotiating their deals, while others could be released Thursday.

"There's a lot up in the air right now," coach Joe Gibbs said. "Most of it, to be truthful, is up in the air."

Brunell had been scheduled to count $6.7 million under the cap in 2007, an unaffordable amount for a No. 2 quarterback. He will return as the backup to Jason Campbell, who became the starter midway through the 2006 season.

Cornerback Shawn Springs is now the top uncertainty on the roster. The Commanders would like to reduce his cap number of $7.4 million, and he could be cut if no deal is reached.

The Commanders are expected to pursue a pair of free agents from Buffalo - cornerback Nate Clements and linebacker London Fletcher - once the free agent market opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Pucillo played 11 games as a reserve last season, often as an extra tight end on running plays. He joined the Commanders last year after previous stints with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns.

Fauria also joined the Commanders last year and played in nine games, making two catches for 17 yards. He severely sprained his ankle in November and ended the season on injured reserve.

That second CB spot is a definite sore spot. I think Clements is overrated though he'd be an upgrade.

Been a while since we did a broom job on them. Got to put that on the schedule for this year. Especially winning up there.

Clements, I think would be a good pickup for them. He will be costly in this years free agency, but he's fairly young and will be an upgrade over what they have. Plus, CB is a position that is difficult to find a good player at. All in all, I can't blame them for going after him.

Fletcher, on the other hand, is typical skins. He's close to over the hill, will be expensive, isn't that good anyway, and is at a position that isn't that hard to fill. In Williams' 4-3, the linebackers are a dime a dozen, just like they are for most 4-3 schemes and really the Commanders could plug that hole in a number of ways that would be much more cap friendly and long-term.

The Commanders stunk on defense last year. I watched them every chance I got and I can tell you... MLB wasn't their problem last year. DL and the secondary were the main culprets... particularly the DL. Linebackers weren't great but that was more a function of the DL not helping them out than the athletes they had. Besides, the weakside OL spot was more of a problem than the middle.

The Skins are hoping that last year's number 2 pick, Rocky McIntosh is going to win the weakside job. Marshall, the MLB would be much better with improved DL play and a better weakside guy next to him. Yet, the Commanders are going to break the bank for Fletcher.

Oh those crazy Commanders... :laugh2:

You gotta love having Snyder coach your bitter rivals.
