Irvin says Vick needs sanctuary of football

02:23 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO – Michael Irvin says to take it from someone who knows: The worst thing that can happen to Michael Vick right now is to be kept away from football.

"I've been there when you spend eight hours a day in a courtroom and people are talking about you like you are the worst person in the world," Irvin said Monday. "I'm not condoning what he might have done, but to take the game from him, at this stage, I think people don't understand how it breaks him."

Irvin went through his own high-profile legal case in July 1996, months after he'd helped the Dallas Cowboys win their third Super Bowl in four years. Before his trial went to the jury, Irvin pleaded no contest to cocaine possession. He was fined $10,000 and put on probation. Then the NFL suspended him from the first four games of the 1996 season.

Vick is facing federal dogfighting charges. He's pleaded not guilty, but the NFL has told him to stay away from training camp, a move that stopped the Atlanta Falcons from suspending their quarterback from the first four games of the season.

"I hurt for him," Irvin said. "I empathize with him because I hear people saying he should take the year off, to forget about football and focus on his legal troubles. But football is what got him through everything – everything! It got him out of where he grew up, out of the hood, out of the ghetto. Football has always been the sanctuary."

Irvin said football was his refuge even during his trial.

"It was my escape even in my own head," he said. "I would count down the hours, not to go home but to go to the football field. I got up there and exhausted myself until I couldn't think about what I was going through."

Vick is one of the NFL's most exciting players, a threat to throw a long pass or break off a long run. Irvin wonders whether he'll be the same player should he make it back to the field.

"I was never the same after I went through that trial – and I had football while I went through it," Irvin said. "I worry about Mike. Will he ever be the same? ... It takes so much out of you."

Irvin, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend, said he hasn't talked to Vick since the legal woes unfolded. But he's followed the news, and the reaction from the Falcons' locker room.

While he understands the support for new quarterback Joey Harrington and the team's vow to move on without their best player, Irvin believes Atlanta players are making a mistake by distancing themselves from Vick.

"I think that's crushing him even more," Irvin said. "I want some guy to say, 'Hey, Mike Vick's our quarterback and he will always be our quarterback. We'll always love him, but we have to move on.' If somebody would say that, you'd be amazed at how uplifting that would be to Mike Vick."

Irvin recalls how much it meant to him when Troy Aikman showed up at his trial.

"I told him not to, that he didn't have to, but he did anyway," Irvin said. "I'm tearing up thinking about it. It meant everything to me. I will never, ever, ever be able to repay him or never, ever, ever be able to forget it."

I don't think the Falcons want or need the distraction of Vick being around.

No. That's incorrect. The worst thing that can happen to Michael Vick right now is for the feds to have a solid case against him. If that's true, in the grand scheme of things, his pro football career will be the least of his concerns. The federal pen ain't no joke.

the worst thing that could happen to vick is to find out how many cigs his patootie is worth in prison. then he can play hard to get at all the prison dances.

The difference that Irvin isn't realizing is that with him it was just a question of human frailty and succumbing to temptatioins, whereas with Vick it's a question of cold hearted cruelty. It was much easier for people to stand by Irvin.

Wouldn't it be ironic that his sanctuary would be equipped with guard dogs to beef up security?

Things that make you go, "Hmmm..."

Well, he's a celebrity, so I'm thinking 10-20 cartons, easy.

Why do these guys think that Vick deserves anything at this point.

He made the decisions that got him here, just like Irvin made his.

Instead of thanking God everyday for the blessings they've received in life, they abuse it and think that they're bulletproof.

And like Irvin found out and Vick will find out - they're not.

Nobody is.

Hmmm. Not sure I agree with that.

And I'm not going to debate which is worse and for what reasons. I'm just saying that I'm not convinced the court of public opinion looks far more favorably on Irvin's misdeeds than Vicks.

It's great how this gets portrayed by ex-athletes as though Vick is entitled to football. IMO, very telling. It tends to verify the concept that athletes are somewhat coddled, and when the comfort zone is removed, things are not so pretty. Reality is a ***** after all.

Us middle-class types don't have that imagined comfort zone of fame and money. That's where the dividing line is, and perhaps some of the frustration that causes these fan incidents that sometimes crop up.

Michael, take your seat next to your fellow genius, Emmitt Smith.
Here is your dunce hat. Emmitt likes his dunce cap. See him wearing his hat, smiling broadly while he practices his ballroom dancing.

Oh, no! Don't take Vick away from football! Oh, poor Vick, made to suffer.

as they say in the south: hogwash!

Deep down, I think that Irvin is a very empathic person, who cares so much for others whom he identifies with that it clouds his better judgment. It's not the first time; and it will not be the last time.

I think I understand what Mike is getting at with his comments. He's hurting for Mike because he knows how it feels.

But I don't know that he's doing anyone any good by making these comments. Irvin, and now Vick, brought this upon themselves.

When you step out of line, most people are far more concerned about justice being served than how difficult it might be for the accused. Yet Mike's comments seem to be a plea for mercy. If Vick wants mercy he probably needs to come clean on his involvement before that can be considered by most.

Good point. And not just athletes, celebrities as well.

There's some truth in these comments.

I'm curious, do these ex-players have any feelings for Vick's teammates at all? Those poor guys would be absolutely drug through a knothole backwards every single week if they had to endure the protests that would happen because of the nature of what Vick is accused of.

If I were Mike Vick I would do one thing above all right now. I would turn all of my assets into liquid form and I would put those monies in some kind of interest bearing account. That way if convicted I'd at least have something left once I got out. That would be my focus right now. How to enjoy the rest of my life.

It's simply more important than football, and no that isn't easy for me to say.

*first time* has to be more than that. then will the winner will need more cigs to help hold vick down.

doggy style has a whole new meaning for vick now.

if vick goes to jail we may have to write him and ask him to settle an "over/under" bet on how many cartons he went for the 1st time.

i'd say pretty close to 20 but i'm not up on prison values as i should be so i'm just guessing.

Actually I think they were talking about Irvin there.

By the way, Irvin said nothing wrong there. Empathy for a guy who has football taken away from him while he has not been proven guilty yet.

Michael has nothing to be ashamed of there!

You guys are in such a rush to pass judgement that you are forgetting that you are the ones in the wrong at this point in our American judicial process!
