SANTA CLARA, Calif.: San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan said he believes guard Larry Allen might consider postponing his retirement to return for his 15th NFL season.

Allen, an 11-time Pro Bowler, spent the last two seasons with the 49ers after leaving the Dallas Cowboys. Nolan still hasn't spoken directly to Allen, a free agent, but said Monday that offensive line coach George Warhop had a recent conversation with him.

"He called a week or two ago to express his interest, but I haven't heard from him since," Nolan said Monday. "I just think because he's a free agent, he just left it up to his agent this time."

The 36-year-old Allen, who lives in the Bay Area year-round, was widely considered to be headed for retirement even though the soft-spoken guard hadn't said much publicly on the issue.

It's hard to imagine the soft-spoken Larry Allen calling anyone to say he wants to come out of retirement (or anything else for that matter).

I believe Allen could possibly play one more year a decent level of play it's not like he plays left tackle...

I agree. He will do fine if he comes back. Hope he does for Alex Smith's sake

I was kind of hoping LA would do an Emmitt, and sign with the 'Boys for a day to retire a Cowboy. I really think he deserves to be in the Ring of Honor. He was the best OL we ever had, maybe the NFL ever had. How many players go to the Pro-Bowl at two different positions? Dude could bench a house, and was extremely mobile his first 10 yrs. in the league.

I kinda hope he stays retired, and goes in with the aforementioned players. What a crew that would make.

I kind of expect him to still do that once he decides he really is retired.

I was a little surprised to see this on ESPN earlier that LA might actually want to play again. Some how I just think, in the end, he won't play another year.

If all the players who have reitred this year actually stay retired, he may not get the chance to go in with that class. I mean, I know that all the Cowboy fans believe that Larry should be in as a first ballot guy but the Voters may not agree with that.

With Favre, NcNair, Odgen, Gaptooth, Seau and Sapp all likely to retire in the same year, it might be pretty tough for Larry to make that class. This does not even consider some of the players that may be deserving that are not yet in. I think a maximum of 7 can go and not all of those are players or modern players. As great as Allen is/was, if all of those players retire in the same year, Larry may not get elected in 2013.

There is no way Larry could replace Kosier. He can't pull like Kosier does. Larry pretty just stands there and blocks who ever come near him. He does that very well but he just doesn't fit our scheme.
