Dallas Cowboys closer to deal with Newman

IRVING – The Dallas Cowboys and cornerback Terence Newman are close to agreeing on a new multi-year contract, according to two sources, but the deal faces a tight deadline.

If NFL owners opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement at their spring meeting today in Atlanta, contracts done afterward would have to follow more stringent salary-cap rules set up for 2010 and beyond.

Newman, 29, is entering the final year of his contract and is due a base salary of $1.4 million. Like they did with Tony Romo, Jason Witten, Bradie James and Jay Ratliff, the Cowboys would like to lock up Newman, who made his first Pro Bowl last season, with a long-term deal.

Newman tied career highs in interceptions (four) and pass deflections (15) in 2007 despite missing three games and playing most of the year with a foot injury.

Also, the Cowboys have exchanged proposals with the agents for Pro Bowlers Marion Barber and Ken Hamlin, but neither is expected to attend the voluntary organized team activities that start today.

Get it done Jerry because it's just one less thing to worry about during the season.

Hopefully the deal is worth around 7 million a year and not more.

Alright, I think we have to ask the question who will be gone soon? We can't re-sign everyone. Obviously, Ware will be re-signed, as will Owens. Does Canty get a long-term contract? We still have to worry about Hamlin and Barber. Do we try to re-sign Hamlin and let Roy go after this year, and move Henry to safety? There is only so much money to go around.

Why would Newman sign a deal now with the decision regarding the CBA so close?

If the league opts out of it and there in no cap in 2010, he stands to make a LOT more money.

Just doesn't make sense to me.

I wonder why Archer didn't include Roy in that list of players JJ locked up?   :p:

no CBA most likely leads to strike shortened season which leads to another Commanders super bowl win...

This seems to suggest that if owners opt out that contracts would be more stringent immediately and not at the end of the season as Adam stated.

Is the difference in how much you can spread out the signing bonus? If so then it would be better for players to sign now and get more signing bonus than waiting till later.

Regardless, if the owners opt out there will still be rules in place to limit contracts.

5 years at just 35 million would be a great deal.

That's around the deal most are hoping Barber signs, and he's a part time RB. Newman will command a bit more than that.

I keep posting it, because I think it's the watermark for where there going to start.

Trufant reached a six-year, $50.2 million deal with the Seahawks on Wednesday that includes $20 million in guarantees. In the first three years of the contract, he will make $28 million.

It's not about the signing bonus anymore, it's about the guaranteed money.

For comparison purposes...

Trufant had told the Seahawks he would be willing to take a hometown discount on a long-term deal. The question was how much less he would be willing to take compared to deals done by Asante Samuel (who signed for six years, $57 million), Nate Clements (eight years, $80 million) and DeAngelo Hall (seven years, $70 million).

I'm thinking Asante money...

Think Newman will get closer to Trufant money but slightly less cause he's older, doesn't have many INTs & has only been to 1 pro bowl. I'd expect a 6 year contract for $45-50M with SB of around $18M, but set up so we can cut him after 4 years w/o hurting our cap.

It could very well be just the opposite.

In order to stop the spending on these contracts, the owners could decide to place their own (cap) on things internally and hold down spending on players to force the salaries to come done and increase revenue to the owners by not alowing salaries to be mandated by the CBA as it has been.

There is a fine line about Anti-Trust guidelines to be followed, but that could be done..just like any other company that hires employees..

..teams could slot payments for positions and years in the league or whatever requirement they stand to agree to and hire and pay on that basis and stop the contracts that are overly intricate designed to get around the current guidelines anyway.

That might very much reduce any contracts TNew might receive going forward.

That's why the team would prefer to do it now and not later and you'd think TNew would prefer to get a good deal notw before this all starts to get very complicated heading toward 2011.

We'll see.

Interesting that there is news, of any kind (even if it's just rumors at this point) that TNew is close to a deal. I honestly wasn't expecting that until after the Hamlin and Barber deals were done.
