How similar are Jason Garrett, Pete Carroll?
February, 4, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Maybe Jason Garrett is more like Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll than we know.

The Dallas Cowboys' coach doesn’t chew gum like Carroll. He’s not as rambunctious on the sidelines as Carroll. He doesn’t count Macklemore as one of his buddies.

But in searching through the Seahawks’ media notes, I came across a section dedicated to Carroll’s beliefs:

Philosophy: It’s all about the ball -- “You win by taking care of the football,” Carroll said.

Central theme: Competition -- “Practice is everything, it’s where we make us,” Carroll said.

Team rules: Always protect the team; no whining, no complaining, no excuses; be early

Style: Great effort, great enthusiasm, great toughness, and play smart

It’s not exactly new stuff. Every coach at every level says these things, right?

The difference is Carroll can apply these things, hence he is a great coach.
This really is it exactly. These philosophies are preached in every lockerroom, on every practice field of every football team- from grade school up. The mark of a good coach is the ability to lead and instill these philosphies in the players so it resonates on Sundays into wins. Players have seen those banners and heard those words so many times they lose their meaning and become cliche. A good coach knows how to give new meaning/emphasis to age old fundamental phrases. Carroll has done that in Seattle.

Pete Carroll actually has a personality and some interesting things to say in interviews. He doesnt speak in cliches or politician like circles.

You mean he's believable....as much as I don't care for Carroll his players play with the cocky swagger that he has

In before the self-loathing. Oh, nevermind.

The biggest difference is the quality of the roster assembled, as Carroll's experience at other stops would indicate. It's not like he suddenly learned to coach when he got the good players.

Pete Carroll was a coach for 20 years before he got a chance at a NFL head gig. In that time he was a graduate assistant, an offensive coordinator, a defensive coordinator, a secondary coordinator, and a DB coach.

He has been coaching for 40 years and earned his way every step of the way.

The Dallas media must be worried for their boi after they looked at the 2014 list of opponents.

Give Garrett 20 years and he might be as good as Carroll. It took him a while to get it right. Garrett can go learn on another team, as far as I am concerned.

I've never known anyone in my life to be on the wrong side almost 100% of the time. Well, I have , but we're not allowed to discuss it in here. Dude, if someone said the Cowboys have a star on the helmets, you'd argue it was a moon. C'mon....Carroll is 10X the coach as JG. He won at every level. He's not in training. He's came up through the ranks.

You seem like a good guy. I like how you word your remarks. You speak like your smart, educated, and have a sense of good football knowledge. Don't discredit yourself and make it seem like you have to be opposite every single time. Kinda starting to sound like Jerry.

Oh, Carroll is obviously a good coach. I never said he wasn't. The point I'm making is that other factors affect a HC's winning percentage.

Like not knowing how to manage a game or run the football with a huge lead? Or did you mean being handicapped with a lunatic for a GM?

Whatever in the world are you talking about, coult? I may disagree with you 100% of the time. That hardly makes me wrong. I think Carroll's a very good coach. I never suggested otherwise.

And thanks for the compliments, but, honestly, I don't mind being opposite the crowd on this issue. I was opposite the crowd in Wade as a DC, too. And on Zimmer as a DC, for that matter. And on Newman's career being done. And on Witten's being done last season. And on the need to sign and expensive OG in the offseason the last two years. When I swim upstream, I've had a habit of being right a lot more often than I have of being wrong. And I don't care what any of the rest of you have to say on the topic. I think Jason Garrett's a good coach who still has some learning to do and who's fighting an uphill battle against a dysfunctional organization (read: Jerry). He's made some mistakes, but the importance of those mistakes on building a successful organization overall get blown completely out of proportion by a fan base that is out for blood because they're tired of losing. So much so, that the biggest things JG has done wrong or should own are actually things that he's getting a pass on (fixing the pass defense and the flip flopping on DCs).

It's backwards, and the fact that a lot of regular posters here think it's not doesn't change my opinion in the least.
