Speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Cowboys executive Vice President Stephen Jones said the team will activate rookie linebacker Jaylon Smith from the non-football injury list but acknowledged Smith's routine will not change. By opening the practice window, the Cowboys just keep open the possibility of him playing but it remains unlikely Smith will see a snap as he continues to recover from a knee injury that included nerve damage from his final game at Notre Dame.

I have been wondering why people keep thinking that the Cowboys have to choose between removing either McFadden OR Smith from the NFI list, when the NFI list has no limitations like IR does. That said, I do not see Smith playing this season.

This is good news. This means his nerve must be completely firing. Love to see #54 out there making some plays! Hopefully not too many as I think he will need a full off-season to become a contributor.

He must be far enough a long to where they still think it's a possible. Is there a benefit from a cap or roster perspective to not IR him even if they know he can't play this year?

Why Is Archa listening to the FAN? Shame they can not get him (Jones) on the local ESPN channel.

No roster spot until 3 weeks from now.
It would cost a spot or IR then.

Just heard about it.

Go Cowboys.
That would be your worst nightmare .. Dak playing well AND the second round pick getting on the field. I almost wish the latter would happen just to see your reaction.

Just to help you out .. here are a few excuses if Smith, as unlikely as it is, does somehow make it on the field

1) That's great, but he took up a valuable NFI list spot all season and only played at the end

2) We had to waste a roster spot on another linebacker all season waiting on Smith to return

3) Drafting Smith was the real reason McClain fell victim to drug use

4) We could have had another second round tight-end to replace Swaim.

Hope that helps!

I would think reading between the lines that nerve is firing. Why would the activate him if it wasn't? I get they needed to make a decision, but they could've simply placed him on IR. But there has to be something that is medically compelling IMO.

I don't know if Smith will be able to play or not and if he can how much he can contribute this season. However this is great news for him and the organization in terms of his recovery.

It's quite simple, actually.

The kids needs motivation to keep working. Activating him does not do anything but he can see it as a vote of confidence. Confidence (in knowing the Cowboys believe in him) gives him hope. Hope nurtures determination which fuels his rehab.

Pure speculation on my part but it sure was fun! :p

You forgot .....5) He is still not ready, just the Front Office trying to come up with a way to make up for the debacle that is Anthony Hitchens
