One of the NFL's best teams could soon be getting even better.

:bang2:

Seymour
Five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour, who has been on the physically unable to perform list following offseason knee surgery, practiced with the New England Patriots for the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon, signaling that his return to the lineup is likely getting closer.

By league rule, the Patriots now have a three-week window in which to evaluate Seymour's progress and conditioning. By the end of the three weeks, the team must either move Seymour to the active, 53-player roster or keep him on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

New England can activate Seymour, if that is the team's decision, at any time during the three-week period.

Seymour, 28, suffered complications from the offseason surgery and was not ready to return to the field at the outset of training camp, so he was deemed physically unable to perform. The league rules stipulate that a PUP player cannot practice in team activities for the first six weeks of the season, although he is permitted to work in individual drills.

There were some reports early this season that Seymour had suffered a staph infection after the knee surgery, but team officials steadfastly denied those reports. There were also suggestions that Seymour might miss the entire season. But based on on conversations with New England officials and sources close to Seymour over the past few weeks, indications are that he could return by early November.

Regarded as one of the NFL's premier defensive linemen, Seymour possesses tremendous versatility, and a rare combination of size, power and quickness. At 6-feet-6 and 310 pounds, he is a prototype end for a 3-4 front, able to anchor against the run and still provide a pass rush. In the New England scheme, Seymour characteristically moves inside to tackle when the Patriots align in a four-man front on passing downs.

The former Georgia star was the Pats' first-round selection in the 2001 draft, the sixth player chosen overall that year. He has appeared in 87 regular-season games, with 82 starts, and has 367 tackles, 29½ sacks, three forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, two interceptions and 27 pass deflections.

The only season in which Seymour was not named to the Pro Bowl team was his rookie campaign. He has been part of three Super Bowl championship teams.

Is it cheating that we get tank johnson soon? The article says after 6 weeks he can practice with the team, and they have three weeks to evaluate him. We would be cheering if we had seymour and we were able to get him back from the pup. I don't like that the pats are getting better, but to say they are cheating is far fetched.

Don't understand the suggestion that NE cheating re getting Seymour back. Don't know his situation but NFL rules require he must have been injuried before the start of TC, before he could go on PUP.

All the cheating accusation only seem to keep the fire going for the Pats as if they are out to prove to people how good they are. Myself I hope all the talk just goes away Pats do not need any more motivation

No kidding. The saving grace here is that no media or sports shows will report this as cheating. Because it isn't.;)

No, but apparently Ray Lewis thinks Adalius Thomas is a coward.

At least that's what I gathered from the subtitles on the TVs in the gym, while they were interviewing Thomas in between Jami Dukes waving and pointing his big meat paws at me and looking like a heart attack...

Haven't seen this anywhere else, tho.

I found it in the Baltimore Sun. I love a little back and forth, lol

Dueling linebackers
Former teammates Lewis, Thomas trade barbs

By Jamison Hensley | Sun reporter
October 25, 2007

Adalius Thomas issued a strong response to Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, who called him "a coward" for critical comments Thomas made about his former team.

"As far as calling me a coward, I think that goes to something personal," Thomas told Boston reporters yesterday. "I don't like it. I will address that with him personally myself. To attack my integrity and say you had to make a scheme up for me ... I didn't know they made up outside linebacker for me. I know he was crying about a big guy in the middle so you can keep blockers off of you. I mean, I don't know if that's a scheme made for you or not."

Thomas, an All-Pro linebacker for the Ravens last season, signed as a free agent with the New England Patriots this year.

In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Thomas took a swipe at Ravens coach Brian Billick and his ex-teammates, saying his former team has "a star-studded system" and no one on the Patriots "beats his chest."

"When you take a shot at men that you claim to love to go to war with, I call those cowards," Lewis said on his weekly radio show Monday. "If you got something to say privately, you don't have to go to a newspaper. If you got something to say to a man, speak it."

Lewis wondered what would make Thomas take those shots at a team that had to "fit him into our schemes."

"You don't become a Super Bowl champion in this business without having character and dignity for what you do for your teammates," Lewis said. "We won a Super Bowl without Adalius Thomas. The New England Patriots won three Super Bowls without Adalius Thomas."

Thomas, who played sparingly for the 2000 Ravens, told reporters yesterday that he believes his quotes to Sports Illustrated were taken out of context.

"I don't think I recall any of the conversation I had, I don't think what I said came out that way," said Thomas, who played seven seasons for the Ravens. "I could be totally wrong. Like I said, it was a compliment of the Patriots. I never downed the Ravens. Anybody that has seen me do an interview in seven years knows my integrity isn't that. If I have something to say to somebody, then I'll say it.

"Nothing that I said was a comment or shot at the Ravens or none of the players. Actually, I said I had a chance to play with Hall of Fame players that was not in that quote. I went on to name names. Ray Lewis was one of the names I named."

Thomas did try to clarify what he was trying to say in the interview.

"The only thing I tried to say was that it's different here than it was there," Thomas said. "I said I played with Hall of Fame guys on both sides of the ball and I named players on both sides, and that's what I said. I said the superstars that were there were everyday household names, from Randall Cunningham to Deion Sanders.

"That's what I said, but that got cut out [of the article]. That's how it went. As far as that goes, I said [coach Bill] Belichick is the same way. Everybody here shies away from the media. I said the head coach there, he stayed in the media when I was there. That's not a shot, that's a fact."

Thomas returns to Baltimore to play his former team Dec. 3.
