Are the Cowboys keeping quiet about Chris Hope?

Obviously, the free safety is a glaring need for the Cowboys defense, and a position believed to be filled through free agency. Of the free safeties available, it seem that only Lawyer Milloy is the only one scheduled for any team visits. Could it be that Jerry and Parcells are trying to keep quiet about Hope, instead of outwardly wanting him, causing his interest from other teams to rise? Jerry and Parcells seem to be getting the best players available at a reasonable cost. If Hope isn't getting any immediate looks, is it possible that Dallas could throw him an attractive bone and get Hope to bite for a reasonable price?

I think Chris Hope would be a very SOLID addition to the team, nothing spectacular by any means. He'll cover pretty good and grab 3/4 INT's.

I hope that is the case, but I'm afraid we are thinking about Hope more than the Cowboys are thinking about hope.

I've heard NO mention of him at all from people close to the Cowboys, whereas those type of folks were all talking about the fact we were targeting Ayodele and Kosier.

I wouldn't mind seeing him on the Boys next season..... certainly an upgrade over last season

I think Dallas with solidify FS in due time, I for one am glad they're not dishing out huge amounts of money to players not worthy of it.

I have a feeling they did not even have him in their sites.

I think hope is a guy who is vastly over rating his skills and wants to be paid much much more then he is worth.

I live in an area that is full of mostly steelers fans and the last couple of years they have complained about the guy.

For the record I wanted the guy because I thought he would be a cheap pickup...but since it seems that is not the case I would rather pass.

I don't see hope as a big upgrade for what he wants to get paid...don't see it happening. Frankly, I'm not interested. Willie Pile is not that much of a downgrade...

Sadly I think there is no Hope ;(

I'd expect Coleman and a draft chioce, maybe a 3rd rounder. There's just too much money tied up in the secondary and FS is not a big money position. Dallas needs another stud linebacker (draft) and stud OL (draft) both should be addressed in rounds 1 and 2.

As for WR, there's David Givens who would be a solid player since Crayton fell off the map and of course Terrell Owens who will open things up tremendously.

What are you talking about? Crayton had an injury last season and never got back in the groove. Why would you replace a young and promising talent with an aging one?

Well said.

Hope was part of a great defense and it has caused him to overestimate his worth, IMO.

If he was anything other than ordinary, he wouldn't still be available, IMO.

That my take on free safety as well.

Marcus Coleman, a duly noted FOB, could start this coming season and then help out as a reserve the following year when the rookie we select in the draft is ready to start full-time.

If the powers that be convince Zim defenses are supposed to field a coverage safety.

He seems to have a fettish for one dimensional run stuffers.

I would like to see Hope in here but if he cost's too much then I can understand but...I do not like hearing that we have to much money tied up in the secondary. There is something wrong in what we were doing last year in the secondary.
I would like to see the Cowboys take a page out of Dick Lebeau's(Steeler def. cordinator) book. They turn Polamalau loose and he creates havoc for opposing teams offenses. Roy can do that for us if we had guys at FS who could cover deep. I'm not sure if people realize just how much depth the Steeler's have in thier secondary.
Ike Taylor-cb
Bryant Mcfadden-cb(rookie)
Troy Polamalau-SS
Chris Hope-FS
Ricardo Colclough-Backup cb
Deshea Townsend-Backup cb
Tyrone Carter-Backup SS
Mike Logan-Backup FS
All of those guys are players who know thier roles and are good tacklers.
Carter was a thorpe-winner(Minnesota) when he came out of college. It looks like the light has gone on for him after landing in Pittsburgh. These guys are the blue-print we should be looking at to raise the level of our secondary and our entire defense. They runa 3-4 defense and they run it very well.
If Roy is allowed to be turned loose our whole defense will improve dramatically.

from PFT:

LITTLE HOPE FOR CHRIS
Although ESPN's Len Pasquarelli has ranked Steelers safety Chris Hope as the No. 19 free agent available this offseason, Hope has yet to line up a single visit, even as other guys are criss-crossing the country in search of the big money that flows in the early days of the signing period.

So what's the problem? As one league source explained, "Hope has no one interested in him because all the teams get the films of all the games. He is slow, can't tackle, and he is dumb, all of the qualities that go into a big contract."

Ouch.

The fact that Hope has yet to even schedule a visit is significant in light of the fact that virtually every team was talking prior to Saturday at 12:01 a.m. to the guys in whom they had heavy interest. So the reality is that the 31 teams other than the Steelers haven't seen fit to include him in the game of musical chairs that, in early March, typically pays out more money than at any other time of the year.

yeah if he were on virtually anyone other than the super bowl champion Steelers, he'd be a total unknown...he just isnt a very good player and probably over-priced himself big time

I'd rather draft someone in the 2nd or 3rd rd than sign Hope to a big money deal...in fact at this point there really arnt any safeties I'd want to sign for significant dollars...there are several good ones we can draft

Givens is actually younger than Crayton by six months with two more years experience...

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if the 'boys signed him. His contract demands are a lil rich, but I'd take him over TO any day.

Hope is a young up and coming player who would fit perfectly in our secondary and in our defense.

We would have a youthful talent at every spot except for one linebacker spot and defensive tackle...

Zim doesn't "buy the groceries". He can't field a cover safety if he doesn't have one to field. Personnel is Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells job...not Zimmer's.

I too think Hope would be a good fit. I wouldn't give him Commander type money but a deal similar to what we gave Ayodele would be about right. If he will play for that I'd take him over Coleman. We certainly don't need Milloy running around on his Rascal Scooter.

I doubt it, since the Cowboy's broadcasted to the whole league that they're looking for a FS in free agency, so I don't think it's too hard for teams to come up with the conclusion that Hope may be one of our targets, and esp. when a glut of FS were taken off the market already
