Are we married to the 3-4?

Sorry, but I've never been a fan of this defense. It was supposed to help liven up our pass rush. Two full years into this defense, and we still struggle getting to the QB.

I also worry about it as a run-stopping defense.

I know our personnel on defense is geared to running the 3-4. But, I think we have the potential to be a decent 4-3 team.

Ware at RDE: Some might think he's small, but he's a stockier build than Jason Taylor, Simeon Rice, Jevon Kearse, Leonard Little, and Robert Mathis.
Ratliff at DT: I think he'd be a great 4-3 DE. He is big enough to occupy tackles, and gets good penetration.
Canty/Spears at DT: I've thought that both of these guys were better suited to be DTs rather than DEs.
Hatcher/Spencer at LDE

LB: Ayodele
MLB: James
LB: Burnett

Carpenter could fill in with depth at all LB spots.

Sorry.....I know we've discussed this. I just don't care for the 3-4. Maybe I ought to give it more time, but I haven't liked what I've seen from the 3-4 in all the years we've run it.

To me, there's a reason most teams run it.

I don't know....Landry basically invented the 4-3...it seems wrong for us not to run it.

Don't hold your breath - 3-4 is here to stay (for now)

He invented the Flex, though, which is pretty different from the stock 4-3.

Either way, say what you will about the 3-4 but it's a damn good run-stuffing D. The team was great at that for most of the year last year... pretty much all of it, and has been since '05.

That said, our pass rush is still awful and the secondary sucks something fierce. I always liked our "boring" 4-3 defense when it led the league 4-5 years ago, but what do I know?

When he was a defensive coach with the Giants, they ran a five man DL....which was standard back then.

Landry began having one of his DL step back to cover the middle of the field. This was the beginning of the 4-3.

Of course, my memory is not what it used to be.....I've been told that you lose ten IQ points for every kid you have.

'til death will we part?'

For the foreseeable future? Yes. At least a minimum of 50% of the front seven would have to be retooled to have an effective, 60 minutes long, 4-3 base defense. Situational? Sure, we can jump into a 4-3 formation on occasion right now, but for long durations each game? I don't think we can and still be as effective as we should be. The Dolphins game will be a better indicator of how well Phillips has adjusted his 3-4 following last week's game.

I always like the 4-3 better but we have no depth at DT to run it...I think Carp would make a better 4-3 backer than a 3-4 backer... but I don't see us going back

We need time with Wade's philosophy. Just give it a little time.
