Granted, Marinelli preaches pursuit on defense and lighter lineman should be able to do this more effectively. However, we are an extreme outlier compared to the rest of the league and giving up that much size is somewhat concerning. The defenses in Tampa Bay that Marinelli oversaw were known as prioritizing speed over size, but even that defense was anchored by two 300+ pounders in Sapp and McFarland.

Are they using Gregory at 230? most 4-3 D ends are around 270. Hardy is bigger than that, Mincey is bigger than that and Lawrence looks thick. He is probably around 270. Crawford is a beast, I am not worried about his weight. In short, no, I dont think our d line is too small. We will have a great rotation to keep everyone fresh.

Good question, I asked this same question couple months ago. More so about stopping the run. And our reluctance to pick up any DTs.
Mildly concerned is how I would rate it right now, will give Marinelli the benefit of the doubt - for now. Think we finally building depth at 3-tech and DEs but 1-tech .....

They are using Gregory at 235, and Lawrence at 251. They don't even have Hardy on there for some reason.

Thanks, I did not click the article. shame on me. Gregory is closer to 245. Lawrence has tree trunk legs, he looks around 265, would you agree? Hardy is massive, he has to be 280.

I wouldn't mind adding a big body in the middle (for short yardage and goal line situations), but overall I'm not concerned. If Marinelli wanted big linemen we'd have them by now. And although we may have an undersized unit, I'm hoping this means that we have a better conditioned unit that won't be gassed in the 4th.

If I were to update those numbers with the current player weights as listed at Dallascowboys.com (251, 303, 285, 245), I'd get an average weight of 271, which would still rank the Cowboys last by a good 10 pounds per player. Even substituting Greg Hardy (279) for Randy Gregory and sticking with the DC.com weights would only give me an average weight of 280 pounds, still the lowest value in the league. Any way you slice it, the Cowboys will likely have the lightest defensive line in the league.

Hayden/McClain - 303
Hardy - 279

Yep. Hardy is basically the same exact size as Tyrone Crawford. He's a big boy for a DE. Other than Gregory being a little light, everyone else is ideal size.

We all know that barring injury, Hardy is starting at least 12 games. That makes him the starter by any measure.

If we play a team like GB and they want to constantly run it then that's a win for us.

The rest of these teams with average QBs won't keep up with our offense if they try to stick to the run.

Plus we run the ball so it could really kill some clock if you're behind against Dallas and running the ball.

Yes - the Cowboys of the 1990s had Russell Maryland and Tony Casillas playing at around 275 pounds each, with Jimmie Jones weighing 280-285 and Leon Lett weighing 290. Haley was 250, and Tolbert was 265, with Jeffcoat coming in around 270 pounds.

To answer that question, not worried about it. At the end of last season, Garrett said that the goal was to get an active DL rotation, and that's pretty clearly what the plan was. In terms of talent, we did more on that front than I thought we could possibly accomplish just in getting Hardy and Gregory (who I consider the best VFA and one of the top 2 rookie pass rushers available). I trust Marinelli enough to know that if the plan was to go with light players in a heavy rotation, then that plan will probably work in the league right now. I'm good.
