Arkin starting center?

There are only two LBs in the HOF that are 6-0 or less. Look at the LBs in the Pro Bowl. There's a statistical reason to avoid small players. There's always going to be outliers on the Bell curve though. My guess is there would be more shorter players that do well if there weren't bias. But you are generally going to go bigger, faster, and more athletic. You lose some of those instinctive great football players that way.

that has always been my problem with the combine and how its results are treated. Combine numbers and measurements and the like should NEVER trump what you see the player do on the field.

That is how we passed on Singletary.

Do you think Costa was the only one responsible for the oline problems last year? Everyone with the exception of Smith looked suspect but Im not going to through the towel in on a young guy like Costa or Doug Free for that matter who played equally as bad at times and I didnt say hand him the keys, I said he earned the right to compete for the starting spot this year and he did mr wizard.

They targeting Costa quite a bit with stunts to the inside. This was a recurring theme late in the year.

When Costa wasn't breaking down mentally, he was getting manhandled phyiscally. See below:

Nagy and Kowalski were very good in the SS, Cone, Forty, and 10 yard split.

They all blow away Andre Gurode's numbers; however, I think that Gurode had really long arms, maybe 35".

I didn't list Costa's measurements, but I think his arm length was 29.5".

Bill Nagy 6'3", 302
40: 5.05
10: 1.75
SS: 4.47
Cone: 7.36
Vert: 30.5
Broad: 9-2
Bench: 26
Arm: ? I think the measurement was over 32

Kevin Kowalski 6'3", 300
40: 5.04
10: 1.71
SS: 4.56
Cone: 7.15
Vert: 27.5
Broad: 8-4
Bench: DNP
Arm: 31.5

David Arkin 6'4-3/4", 300
40: 5.31
10: 1.88
SS: 4.63
Cone: 7.6
Vert: 29
Broad: 8-7
Bench: 25
Arm: 33.875

David DeCastro 6'4-5/8", 316
40: 5.43
10: 1.82
SS: 4.56
Cone: 7.30
Vert: 29.5
Broad: 8-2
Bench: 34
Arm: 32.375

Andre Gurode 6'4-3/8", 316
40: 5.34
10: 1.89
SS: 5.05
Cone: 8.15

That's how a lot of teams passed on him and others. Still the point is the odds are way in your favor to get bigger, faster and stronger LBs. You just have to keep an eye open for those outliers. Most of the time you end up with a good LB with some limitations.

It's hard for a 6-0 LB to cover 6-5 and taller TEs. If you've ever played LB you understand how frustrating it is to blanket someone and they still throw it over you and complete a pass. That's just one area being short hurts.

Plus that little bit about Gurode being an All-America at a major conference and one of the best players in the entire country where Nagy and Kowalski, well, weren't.

You don't hype a 4th rounder?

What a naive approach to the draft. You can get quality stud players in the 4th round.

What a generic argument.

Gee, maybe we can hype every UDFA too. I mean Romo and Austin, right? See how dumb that sort of argument is?

That would make him a 320-325 pound center, bigger than Gurode was.

Very interesting, it was known it would take him an offseason to build up, hopefully he can turn into something soon cause we definitely can't afford to waste resources at this point.

I'm pretty sure Gurode was close to 330, despite whatever he may be listed at

A little scared to see Romo work with his 4th center in 3 years, but Costa is terrible.

......ANOTHER NEW CENTER? and the guy has NEVEr played the position? What a brutallly horrible idea. If it was any team but Dallas I'd believe it. Jerrah probably came up with this buffoonery himself.

Not really, no. And I did actually hype Romo and Austin at that time.

You want real dumb? Tell me how a 4th round pick shouldn't be well regarded. That's spoken from the mouth of someone who doesn't understand the NFL Draft.

Really? I don't understand the draft?

We picked a guy who dominated at a small school. He lasted until round 4. Yet people on this board have repeatedly call for him to start. Last year at G and now at Center. He's got two huge knocks against him coming in. First, he is clearly not physically ready. Houck pretty much told everyone that he came in a disaster strength-wise. Second, he never played against decent competition. You can overcome both of those things, but it isn't easy nor is it quick.

He's a nice piece of potential. But given where he was at the end of last year, we should be happy if he can move up the ranks to simply put on a uniform each Sunday in 2012. That would be a major jump for him. Hyping him as a potential starter is nothing but wishful thinking.
