ALLEN PARK -- If the Detroit Lions want to beat the Dallas Cowboys in the opening round of the playoffs, it starts with winning the battle in the trenches. The Lions will likely have to do that without two of their better linemen, one on each side of the ball.
Detroit has officially ruled out Larry Warford for the contest. The guard injured his right knee in the season finale against the Green Bay Packers and was unable to practice this week.
It is expected rookie Travis Swanson will get the start at right guard, his fourth at that spot and fifth overall.
Unlike Warford, defensive tackle Nick Fairley did practice this week, working in a limited capacity both Thursday and Friday. Still, he's listed as doubtful against the Cowboys.
On Monday, coach Jim Caldwell said it would take a miracle for Fairley to return from the knee injury that's sidelined him since Oct. 26, but Caldwell seemed to soften his stance as the week wore on.
