Despite no big back or big-play receiver, Philly feels confident.
By Larry O'Rourke
Of The Morning Call

The Eagles jettisoned controversial and five-time former Pro Bowl wideout Terrell Owens in March, then held off on drafting a wide receiver in late April's draft until they took possession-type receiver Jason Avant in the fourth round and return specialist/project-type wide receiver Jeremy Bloom in the fifth round.

They also still don't have the Jerome Bettis-like big back that so many of their fans and critics would like to see on the payroll.
But are the Eagles worried?

Not if what they have been saying during their first minicamp of this offseason is taken at face value.

''We have a lot of good players at wide receiver,'' said Marty Mornhinweg, the former assistant head coach who became offensive coordinator this winter after Brad Childress left for the Minnesota Vikings head coaching job. ''The competition is great.''

Todd Pinkston, who had a career-best 60 catches in 2002 and overall has 184 receptions in five healthy seasons, is still not part of that competition in the passing-oriented minicamp because he is being held out of workouts after missing all of last season with an Achilles tendon tear. But Pinkston's weekend of inactivity has not dulled quarterback Donovan McNabb's commentary on the new wide receiver corps.

''Reggie [Brown, the 2005 second-round draft pick] is a guy that you can definitely see has the knack for the big-play ability,'' McNabb said. ''But also, I think bringing in guys like [free agent] Jabar Gaffney, drafting Jason Avant, and having Todd, Greg [Lewis] and those guys here, gives [Brown] a little leeway to do something now. Those guys as well can take pressure off of him.

''We spread the ball around. It's something that I take pride in. So now, everyone gets involved and I think it makes it more exciting for the receivers to line up knowing they have a chance to get the ball.''

And those theories about needing a big, Bettis-like back to get the tough yards?

''It depends on your schemes,'' general manager Tom Heckert said. ''If you are going to line up, hand it off and bang it inside all the time, you're going to want that big guy.''

Since the Eagles did not draft a big back — and USC's LenDale White was available when they made their first two selections — their actions turn up the volume on Heckert's words.

Barring the signing of a cast-off veteran big back, the Eagles appeared headed for training camp with the relatively inexperienced 5-10, 200 pound Bruce Perry as their No.1 ''big'' back. They also are keeping their fingers crossed that 6-0, 222-pound Correll Buckhalter's knees stay together after two seasons on the sideline, and that 6-1, 243-pound fullback Thomas Tapeh could be ready for an enhanced role if he holds up after he missing all of last season because of hip surgery.

So their running game — and a lot of their passing game — will still undoubtedly feature 5-8, 203-pound Brian Westbrook in the tailback/halfback role.

''[Westbrook] is a little shorter than people think, but he's a little 'bigger' than people think because he's really put together,'' Mornhinweg said. ''He's more physical than people think.''

The other teams in the NFC East also proved to be a lot better in 2005 than many people thought. The New York Giants (11-5) won it, and were joined in the playoffs by Washington (10-6). Dallas went 9-7. Those records included a six-game sweep of the Eagles, who had been to the playoffs every year from 2000-04, including the latter four as division champs.

And each of those other teams made significant moves in the offseason, most notably the Cowboys with their signing of Owens.

''Everyone talks about the free-agent signings of the Giants, Dallas and the Commanders,'' McNabb said. ''I think what we have to do is just get back to the mode of playing good football. We have guys here who we feel can make big plays for us. And I think with having a [four]-year reign as NFC [East] champs, I see no reason why we can't be back at the top.''

I honestly believe they'll start running the ball quite a bit early on, something like about 50% of their plays will be runs and then ESPN will claim "Look at the new Philly running game!" Then eventually as the season comes along they'll go back to throwing the ball 65% of the time.

While I think McNabb is the best QB in the NFC East, I think that his strengths are that he doesn't need a powerful running game or a really good O-Line. However his weakness appears to me that he really needs to have a good WR corp. When he doesn't have that, it really seems to curb his effectiveness.

I think Reggie Brown may have a breakout year this year...their WR corps could be stronger then alot of us are giving them credit for.

I am happy and surprised by this article. I recently saw the 2nd Philly game from last year on the NFL channel as the game of the week. They ran the ball very effectively against us and if you all remember, had the game in hand until Roy's big INT for the win.

If they ran the ball more, would they be a better team ? I think so...IMHO.

The fact that they don't, well that just makes me happy.

somebody better tell donovan that it isn't 2004 anymore, and that the past is the past. and furthermore, it certainly doesn't guarantee you anything today.

The Eagles had their window of opportunity. It has now passed. They have done nothing in my opinion to bolster their offense.

Our run defense really fell apart late in the season with Dat and Singleton out of the lineup. Hopefully the offseason additions will turn that around.

I second that big time. The Eagles front office just doesn't get it. You need PLAYMAKERS to win the Superbowl. They only have 1 in McNabb. They reached the Superbowl when they had Owens in the lineup. Relying on Brown, Lewis, Pinkston, and Gaffney won't get it done.

In the draft, they should have picked up Lendale White in the 2nd round and traded for Javon Walker.

I look forward to seeing the Eagles finishing in the cellar of the NFC East again.:)

I think the Eagles will be tough this year....they still have lots of talent...This division is going to be a dog fight.

I can see any of these teams finish first or last in our division. The scary part is.......what if Big Bill doesnt make the playoffs again this year?.....We will be beating ourselves up while teams like the Seahawks will have a cake walk to make the playoffs.

The NFC East should be fun to watch........

I cant wait.....

Somethings got to give somewhere. I think this is the year the Skins and the Eagles take a step backward while the Cowboys and the Giants make their big push. We're the two teams that added skill players. Yes, the Skins added ARE and an LB in the draft, but what else?

Westbrook can be a terror, but they just don't have enough in the mix from what I can see. Maybe some of these newer players (Gaffney, Brown, LJ) and some of the injured guys (Buckhalter and the FB) can magically blend back in and reach their full potential playing together after one training camp.

More likely not.

McNubb is delusional. I think he himself is quickly declining in skills. He's gotten too "chunky" (pun intended). He's not going to be all that effective unless he drops some weight so he can scramble again. If he can't hurt you with his feet like last year and part of the year before....he can't hurt you very much.
I think its funny that people say the Eagles were just as good before TO as with TO....actually they were better before TO. TO actually made them competitive one year longer than they should've been. Having TO masked the fact that they have been declining on defense, the other WRs sucked, and they had no running game.
I don't think it mattered a whole lot that Mcnubb was injured last year, without TO they didn't have anyone else to hurt you with anyway.
If Mcnubb is fully healthy and has lost some weight then I would agree that he's the best QB in the division. If he's still fat and slow and slightly injured...I'd take Bledsoe over him.
The difference is...Philthy's defense isn't what it used to be and their WR corps didn't dramatically improve in the offseason. Reggie Brown doesn't start catching balls and they'll be in trouble.
Meanwhile, every other team in the division got significantly better this offseason adding some big-time FA's at key positions.
I honestly see Philthy finishing last in the division again unless Eli continues to suck or the skins force Jason Campbell to start.

the Eagle's problem is that they didn't significantly improve while everyone else in their division has

I agree. But the fact remains, Westbrook is not an every down RUNNER. Buckhalter hasnt been healthy. Moats is in the mold of WB. They dont have a power running game. I think you need to be able to rely on your running game to suceed in the NFC East
