Local celebrities race to aid diabetes association at party

By ANGIE SUMMERS

Although Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was seen walking the red carpet Tuesday night with his sweetie (gag me :puke:) , Carrie Underwood, at the 42nd annual Academy of Country Music Awards, he was solo during a recent party at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.

Romo and Dallas Mavericks basketball coach Avery Johnson were engrossed in conversation while guests and local celebrities milled around them at the Stars of Texas ... Racing Against the Odds event last month.

Star-Telegram sports columnist and radio personality Randy Galloway and his wife, Janeen, served as honorary chairmen of the event, while working chairmen included Cathy and Bob Zollars, Mary Blake and Chuck Meadows.

Top committee members included auction chairmen Melanie and Jamie Adams and Julie and Troy Moncrief and restaurant chairmen Amy and Jim Severson. Arlington residents John David and Leslie Moritz were also there representing the Moritz auto dealership, an event sponsor.

Everyone was there to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The event generated nearly $350,000 last year and almost $2 million over the past six years.

The room was filled with local celebrities including former gridiron stars Ron Springs, Everson Walls and Daryl Johnston plus television sports anchor and Arlington resident Newy Scruggs. Country singer Charley Pride was a no-show due to illness. He was supposed to start the night with The Star-Spangled Banner, but singer Rudy Gatlin stepped in for a last-minute performance.

Arlington residents Michael and Marty Reiswig were also there with guests Pat and Steve Laird -- he's an attorney in Fort Worth; she's a dentist in Colleyville -- and guests Jim Babcock, owner of Babcock Ranch in Valley View, and his escort, Anna-Leigh London.
