Macklin agrees to 1-year deal with Commanders

Sometimes, the voice of Joe Gibbs can have a great impact.

That had to be the case Thursday when Gibbs, head coach of the Washington Commanders, talked Cardinals cornerback David Macklin into accepting a one-year deal with the Commanders over three more lucrative deals with other teams. Macklin agreed to a one-year, $760,000 deal Thursday.

The Chiefs, Eagles and Saints had better financial offers on the table, but Macklin agreed to fit within the Commanders' cap restraints and accept a deal for the NFL minimum, along with a $40,000 signing bonus. The Chiefs were offering him two years of security.

Instead, Mackin, 28, decided to compete against three other veteran Commanders cornerbacks for playing time. Macklin had seven starts last season for the Cardinals and played 41 percent of the defensive plays.

Funny b/c if we signed him folks would call it a "good depth pickup" that "allows us to look to other positions in the draft"

I always joked with my friend (who is a Cards fan) that he was my favorite player on their team.

...we're in trouble.

TO just called and said he's scared. :)

Then Crayton called and said he was going to make a out of Macklin, just like he does with Taylor.

Macklin is good depth for the Skins, but they don't need CB depth, they need pass-rushers

They will have them, they will play with 6 CB on the field and CB blitz all the time.

Something about him turning down better teams like the Eagles and Saints sits well with me. Anything to keep those teams from improving, even if its just their depth.

Yep, he's a marginal starter but good BU. But their main concern should be, like ours, getting pressure. Good sign, but doesn't do much in the big picture. Kinda like A Glenn for us. Sad thing for them is, like the Cowboys of 2003-2006, the coaches/scheme is the real problem. Get rid of Joe and the DC and maybe they can start over?

Macklin was a third round pick in 2000. He was the next PSU player taken after Courntey Brown and Arrington. He went a round before Brandon Short.

He has 14 picks in 7 years.

After the Hamlin pickup, I'm going to have to disagree with you. Most of the posters on this board seemed a little indifferent - and Hamlin's a starter!

He's a solid zone corner.

he supposedly excels in the cover two, so thats a plus for us (well, thats guessing that GW decides to try and run it next year)

So I guess it's Springs, Rogers, Smoot, Macklin then?

Rather than the Bly, Rogers, Smoot lineup which was talked about at one point.

Commanders are obviously making their defensive backfield a priority.
