Nike turns down Humane Society request to sack Vick

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) Nike has no plans to dump Michael Vick from its roster of celebrity athletes, turning aside a request from the national Humane Society to cut ties with the Atlanta Falcons quarterback over alleged ties to dogfighting.

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, on Tuesday released a letter that he sent to the apparel giant.

"We trust that Nike does not want to be associated with any celebrity who is linked to this odious form of animal cruelty," Pacelle wrote.

Nike spokesman Dean Stoyer said the company planned to honor its lucrative deal with Vick, who worked with the company to design a line of athletic shoes and has been used prominently in advertising campaigns.

"There is no change in the status of the agreement between Nike and football player Michael Vick," Stoyer said. "He is rightfully presumed innocent and afforded the same due process as any citizen, rather than be tried in the court of public opinion. Nike will continue to monitor the situation, but has nothing further to say at this time."

During an April 25 raid on a Virginia home owned by Vick, authorities seized 66 animals, most of them pit bulls, and equipment that suggested they were being used in a dogfighting operation.

Vick, a registered dog breeder, has claimed he rarely visited the home and was unaware it could be involved in a criminal enterprise. He blamed relatives for taking advantage of his generosity.

But authorities say they've been told that Vick was involved in dogfighting, and federal investigators searched the property this month. No charges have been filed.

"We recognize that Mr. Vick has not been charged with a crime," Pacelle wrote in his letter. "But we know that Nike has high standards for its spokespersons."

The Humane Society already called on NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to punish Vick if criminal charges are filed against the quarterback.

Goodell met with Vick during the NFL draft and league investigators are looking into the case to determine whether disciplinary action is warranted. The new commissioner has made player conduct one of his top priorities, already giving Pacman Jones a one-year suspension and barring Tank Johnson and Chris Henry from the first half of the upcoming season.

In the letter to Nike, Pacelle noted that AirTran Airways ended its relationship with Vick in May. The quarterback had been a pitchman for the airline since 2004, doing radio ads and billboard advertising, but Vick's reputation was tarnished by the dogfighting case and other embarrassing incidents.

"At the very least, Mr. Vick was not vigilant enough and an unacceptable situation developed on one of his properties," Pacelle wrote. "It remains to be seen whether all the personal accounts and information about his role in dogfighting are sufficient to connect Mr. Vick to the alleged dogfighting operation."

I would be interested to see a poll of Vick fans as follows:

Do you care if Vick was involved in dog fighting?

1. Yes
2. No

And I bet it comes back with "yes" as an answer.

I am not judging anybody here. I bet they don't care. I can think of a lot worse things personally like I have said before. Like I said before other than a possible suspension, I don't think this will hurt his marketability very much at all. Nike is not leaving him even if he is charged I bet.

For right now, Nike has no reason to sever ties with Vick. But other companies have sever ties with an athlete who was accused. Kobe comes to mind, he lost couple of endorsement deals in wake of sexual assult allegation and Kobe is heck of lot more recognized and popular than M. Vick.

However, if Vick is charged and found guilty, I believe Nike will sever ties with Vick.

I can see their point in waiting until the whole truth comes out.

In this circumstance, I believe that Vick deserves that much.

We can try him in the court of public opinion because, at the end of the day, our opinions mean little with respect to what actually happens.

But if he is ultimately proven guilty of said allegations, I would hope that any and all sponsors would drop him like a bad habit.

I think it might take something more substantial.

I mean, when it comes to football marketing, Michael Vick IS Nike. I don't think there's anyone else that could even touch his marketability for the sporting apparel for football. It would take alot for Nike to cut ties with that, I think.

Dunno. Nike is so huge that I wonder if it will really matter?

I mean, I am not going to stop buying Nike if Vick advertises whether or not he is involved with dog fighting.

I have Nike shoes, Nike clothing, Jordan clothing, I use Nike One Platinum Golf Balls, I have MJ/Nike posters from when I was a kid hanging up in my room still, Nike Driver/3 Wood......etc....

Whether or not Vick gets charged or not will have no impact on whether or not I buy Nike stuff. Nike's "brand appeal" trumps anything that of Vick's appeal.

And I suspect that most anyone who buys Nike stuff to begin with will continue to do so.

The little boys eat Vick up. It's takes them a long time to realize he's not any good. Nike does trump Vick, but they pay these guys huge dollars for a reason - the little boys want to be like them, and so they've got their customers from age 8 on up - and fortunately for them, I don't know any little boys who know or care what dogfighting is. For appeal to that group, I don't think the NFL has anyone like Vick for Nike to market.

Yep.

Nike had me hooked with Michael Jordan when I was a kid.

As far as their golf stuff is concerned....that just comes from my experience. Though, I am looking to replace my Nike Driver with something from Cleveland. And their golf balls are one of the better ones on the market, but I found a place where they sell them for dirt cheap ($25 instead of $40-$45)....not that I actually care, since its usually my dad buying them for me anyway....

I'm switching the topic. Do you like those golf balls and how do they play? What golf ball would you compare or contrast them to? I've been playing the Titleist Pro V1's but am thinking I want to experiment.

Regarding Nike dropping him. If charges are filed every animal cruelty lobby in the world will go after Nike if they don't. It's kind of like what happened to Don Imus. As soon as his sponsors felt pressure, they bailed, and without the sponsors he has no show.

Now Nike has Tiger Woods and he is their main guy. I do think if Vick is found guilty of dog fighting Nike will drop him quick instead of facing what will be a public relation nightmare

I can only speak for myself, but if he were convicted of the charges, and Nike kept him on the payroll, I would make it a point not to buy from Nike.

The biggest vote I can make as a consumer is who to give - and not give - my money to.

It sounds like you do it because Vick endorses it.
