Pacman: I'm ready if Owens takes field
DB eager to face troubled receiver
By JIM WYATT
Staff Writer
Titans cornerback Pacman Jones didn't like the thought of facing the Cowboys if wide receiver Terrell Owens wasn't going to be on the field.
"Ain't no way T.O. is going to play,'' Jones said Wednesday. "If you put two and two together, you know he's not going to be out there this weekend. ... I had this game circled on my calendar. This was my Pro Bowl.''
Jones made those statements as reports swirled that Owens had attempted suicide.
Owens, who has a broken hand, practiced the rest of the week, however, and is making the trip to Tennessee. He wouldn't tell reporters Friday whether he's playing against the Titans. He's "questionable" on the injury report.
Jones said he now expects Owens to play.
"I am ready. I'm excited,'' Jones said Friday. "I just have to make sure I tackle him. He gets yards after the catch. I just have to make sure when he catches the ball I have to get him down.''
Line shuffle: The Titans are expected to adjust their offensive line Sunday because of injuries.
Left guard Zach Piller (ankle) again missed practice Friday, and right tackle Jacob Bell filled in. Second-year pro David Stewart worked at right tackle.
Benji Olson was back at right guard after missing practice on Wednesday and Thursday.
"Our young guys will have to step it up if some guys can't play,'' center Kevin Mawae said.
"I just have to trust the guys coming in and trust what they're going to do and they'll trust me. We have a tough opponent, and their front seven is playing really well."
The Titans also will promote tackle Justin Geisinger, a former Vanderbilt player, from the practice squad to the 53-man roster before Sunday's game and release running back Quinton Ganther.
Wardrobe malfunction? Offensive players were decked out in gray cotton shorts at Friday's practice as a show of solidarity.
Defensive players wore blue shorts, which is usually what the entire team wears.
The gray shorts were a little too tight for some players.
"I tried to get some loose ones,'' tight end Ben Troupe said, "until I realized there ain't none of them loose.''
Coach Jeff Fisher said he was looking into the matter.
"There was a mutiny by the offense today. I haven't gotten the specifics, but I will,'' Fisher said.
"If that is the direction we are going to go, we need to upgrade the style of shorts.''
Nice work, kid: Rookie safety Calvin Lowry has impressed the coaching staff. On Sunday in Miami, he forced a fumble and had a big hit.
"He has been productive. He needs to just keep going,'' Fisher said.
"He is playing a very difficult position — he's a gunner — and he is working regularly against a double team."
Gunners line up wide on punt coverage, and one of their chief responsibilities is to be one of the first players downfield.
Lowry, a fourth-round pick, is the team's second-leading special teams tackler with three.
"It is just repetition, and being able to let the game come to me instead of go after it,'' Lowry said.
VY show: Fans are invited to join Vince Young, some of his teammates and celebrity pals to view the first episode of "Next Level — Vince Young," a reality show featuring the rookie quarterback.
The viewing is 7 p.m Tuesday at Layl'a Rul (909 20th Ave. South). A limited number of tickets are still available at LP Field for $100 each. Proceeds benefit the Vince Young Foundation.
The series debuts on BET at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 4.
Wives show support: Wives of several Titans coaches will be decked out in unique Titans jerseys at Sunday's game. The jerseys will say "Luv Ya Coach" on the back in a show of support for their husbands.
It's the idea of Carrie Gerlach Cecil, wife of safeties and nickel backs coach Chuck Cecil.
Phone drive: Fans attending Sunday's game are encouraged to donate used cell phones to be recycled. There will be collection points near LP Field entrances.
Proceeds benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.
