Assuming we are unable to sign a veteran WR in 2008

what are our best alternatives to enhance our WR corps this season?

IMO, I think JJ will do whatever he can to get us a vet WR (prob R Williams or Boldin, in that order). However, if we take what the GMs and coaches of Detroit and Arizona are saying at face value, and we can't get a trade that we LIKE done, what are our best alternatives?

I have several ideas.

1. First of all, we definitely want to rest TO where possible during TC/pre-season so to keep him fresh as possible during the regular season and playoffs.

2. I think we have to try to accelerate the development of Stanbach as much as possible. Even if it's only for a handful of plays/game where he runs specific plays and routes. Outside of Austin and Glenn (more on him later), he's got the best speed at that position

3. In the Draft, we need to reach a compromise between WRs who have the best long term potential and the players who can contribute sooner rather than later.

I think that this last point is important. This begs the question, which WRs have the combination of both qualities? With the chat with the Huddle Report, I think that they mentioned Monk, Hardy, and Doucet (I think) as those WRs who are most ready to contribute from Day 1. (I may be missing a name or two however.) I'm sure the Board members on the Zone have their own opinions!

Finally, a "relatively" healthy T Glenn for at least PART of the season would be a major postive for us in that it would give time for the rookie WR and Stanbach to get acclimated to the NFL game. That said, I don't think we should mentally count on Glenn. If it works out, that's great.

Do you guys/gals have other ideas?

Bring back Terry Glenn and Draft a WR with one of our Day 1 picks, possibly another later in the Draft and let the chips fall where they may.

I really think TG is done.

We can't rely on him. If he can play, that's great. But we better be ready if he can't.

I am down with that plan.

Even if he comes back he is no longer a #2 WR.

Add into the mix Stanback, and our WR corps would be looking pretty good.

I think this is the perfect time to draft a WR we have TO, Witten and Crayton along with Hurd and the offense was very dangerous last season. By bringing highly drafted WR in now it allows him to learn without being forced to carry a big load. If you wait around until TO is gone then you’re in trouble trying to fill the vacancy

I think if we dont get a vet WR we are in trouble.

We need a vet to bridge the rookie gap if we in fact get a good rookie WR.

I dont see any way around it.

Things that were proven last year for that position.

  1. Without TO out we are mortal
  2. Terry Glenn has very little left
  3. Crayton is an ok #3 but thats it
  4. Stanback is too skinny LOL

We have a vet to bridge the gap his name is TO. This offense was able to put up some big numbers this past season without Glenn so I know this team can put up points.

Agreed, this is the perfect time to draft a WR and let him develop without having to have to carry much of the load.

Still wouldnt mind a "Wes Welker" type in the slot..........that little guy from Calif. somewhere..lol.......not in the 1st, but a trade up in the 2nd.......

extreme quickness, enough speed (vrs Welker) to stretch the feild from the slot to keep the FS honest........

If we dont get one I think it's hope TG can return and contribute while the guy we pick this year, and Stanback, get groomed to maybe step in.

T.O. does need to sit out training camp, thats why he gets a hammy every year. He knows we need him the freshest down the stretch.

Glad people are starting to get the picture. This board used to go nuts when T.O. would be 'faking it'. Sheer lack of foresight.

He did not have a hammy last year a high ankle sprain is what kept him out and has nothing to do with training camp. TO like most vets do not need much time in camp or in pre-season but TO like most players need to get some team work in during camp.

TO is playmaker... he is not filler... but if you want to throw in bridge gapper.. thats fine. I dont think it fits.

Not a filler? What are you talking about. Dallas offense without Glenn was able to put up big numbers last season bringing in a rookie WR in would allow him time to learn without putting a big load on him because we have weapons already. Adding another vet WR while I'm not aginst it I don't think it is critical. I do think getting a top WR in the draft is important

It would be helpful if folks were more specific about what they want, inasmuch as all wide receivers already on the Dallas team are "vets." They aren't rookies.

:D
