Well, we are 2-2. Could have been 1-3 and just as easily could have been 4-0.
We have been spotty in about every area we could be. We have not been awful anywhere, nor have we been great in any area either.
Passing offense:
We have seen more of the "good" Bledsoe than the "bad", but the threat of the "bad" has perhaps made Parcells and Payton too cautious with our passing game. Key has made big plays, but has had two boneheaded penalties in both our losses and both meant FGs instead of TDs. Glenn has been solid except for two routes run too short. Crayton has made some big plays, but is too free with the ball. Witten has been underused, and we lost two games because of throws to Glenn with Witten open. The backs have been a non-factor, for the most part. The OL has held up fairly well in protection, but had some breakdowns at crucial times.
Rushing Offense:
We have been okay, but have lacked the big play. I don't like that stretch play that we seem to use about a third of the time. That as well as play calling have made us inconsistent and have kept us from dictating the game. The blocking has been inconsistent.
Pass defense:
We have gone from solid to terrible and back. The pass rush has improved, but we seem to always just miss getting there at crucial times. Other than 3 plays the cornerback play has been pretty solid, if not spectacular. FS is another matter.
Run defense:
Has been Jekyll and Hyde. We shut down two of the best RBs than have trouble with SF and Oakland. This is where we lost the Raider game.
Special teams:
We started off awful, but have improved in every area. We still seem to make a mistake when it will hurt us the most.
Coaching:
Just like all our other areas we have been spotty here as well. We have had more than a few of those, "What the hell was that call," on both sides of the ball. I think we have been slow to adjust, especially on offense, and we seem to stick with things too long that are not working, and go away too quickly when something is working. We tend to get cute instead of sticking with what has been working. Sometimes it seems that we are over-thinking what the opposition is going to do, and change up before they take it away.
Overall, I'd say we have some problems in run blocking, LB and FS that are keeping us from clicking. That was to be expected with all the young guys and added pieces, but it has been the vets and the coaching that is compounding the problem.
I'd say we may be more in a complete rebuilding mode than many thought. Our talent has improved, and I don't see us losing many games by 20, but I can see us struggling to be a .500 team.
