Should Miles Austin be thanking Terrell Owens?

By dcfanatic,

This was a very interesting conversation today on The Michael Irvin Show.

We all know Miles Austin has been on this team for a few years now and he had a front row seat to the Terrell Owens show while the old timer was the #1 WR for the Cowboys.

So what did Miles Austin learn from Terrell Owens?

Irvin Show talks about Terrell Owens affect on Miles Austin

I think Miles had a good head on his shoulders and he's worked hard to get into the position he's in right now. Coming from a small school you aren't given anything at the NFL level. In most cases you have to be twice as diligent in showing the coaches you are worth a shot because there is no pedigree backing you up.

So we know Miles probably didn't need too much work in that department.

But I do think he learned a whole lot about being an NFL caliber WR from Terrell Owens over the past few seasons. Just being around a guy who will be a Hall Of Famer one day should help a young kid regarding the little things we don't see going on in practice.

Mike makes a great point that we should all hope Miles learned what NOT to do from seeing the mistakes made by Owens as well.

Funny thing is that over the past few seasons I have always heard/read that Sam Hurd and Patrick Crayton were high ranking members of the Terrell Owens posse, but I don't remember Miles being a huge part of all that.

Probably a good thing too.

T.O. is one of the best trained, best conditioned, best practiced athletes in the world.

There were many things to learn from the presence of T.O.

T.O.'s personality and Miles will are alot different, and considering that personality isn't contagious, we should be fine.

For the cowboys sake I hope miles learned from to's work ethic but ignored his antics. TO is a great athlete but a horrible professional. good luck to miles in his career.

Wouldn't it be something if Miles was really the "real deal" and became our next star WR... without the diva attitude?

It would make him one of the few non-diva #1 WRs in football, would it not?

From the top of my head, he'd join the ranks of...

Larry Fitzgerald
Greg Jennings
Marques Colston
Vincent Jackson
Reggie Wayne
Andre Johnson
Calvin Johnson

Did I leave anyone out?

Yep. Updating my list.

And by "diva", I suppose I mean an arrogant guy who has done something that blatantly goes against the "team concept" (or hurts the team in general) either with off-field actions (including words) or on-field petulance.

Definite "diva" WRs, in my opinion, are...

Terrell Owens (shocking, I know)
Randy Moss
Steve Smith
Roy Williams
Chad Ochocinco
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
Brandon Marshall
DeSean Jackson (maybe he hasn't done anything too "anti-team" yet, but it's just a matter of time.)
Antonio Bryant
Braylon Edwards

Just another view.

Miles has had always potential but he never panned out until now.

Yes, until now. That means now that TO is gone.

Maybe Miles didnÄt learn the right things from Owens. Maybe Owens with his overwhelming character and egoism held Miles back. Maybe he was in Miles head more than it was good for Miles (the same could be said about Romo).

Now that TO is gone Miles can be himself because he doesn't have Mr. Me in his ear. and that's the time where he starts to show what we all expected from him long time ago.

This is a major stretch.

For years, there have been many reports about Owens being a great on-field mentor to players, always willing to help the youngsters with technique and whatnot. I'm not sure how much T.O. tutored Miles specifically (we know he was a big help to Sam Hurd) but it's a reach to believe he might've had the opposite effect on Miles.

I guess all the articles and quotes from players about the positive effect TO had on them (on the field) was all just BS then...

... and I also suppose TO was holding a gun to Miles Austin's head while he was here saying "don't you go and be a good receiver until I leave here, ya hear?"

suuuuure. lulz.

I agree. While I'm no fan of TO I have always respected his ability and his dedications of keeping in shape. Like you said Miles personality is what it is a much more milder manner than TO

TO made all of our WR's better except Roy. Roy was only one who didnt work as hard or want to work as hard as TO. Im sure the younger WR's like Hurd and Miles followed suit.

I pray Miles learned from watching a great player like T.O. practice and play on Sundays.

I hoped he watched a lot of Mr. Irvin as well. And what not to do from Mr. Irvin. Well, atleast don't get caught.

From what I recall, TO used to hype Hurd alot. He took him under his wings and worked with him extra after practice. You can see that Hurd learned some things about working out from TO as he is much bigger than when he arrived here as a rookie.

I don't remember TO talking much about Austin. This always kind of surprised me because Miles appeared to have much more athletic ability and was physically much more like TO than Hurd was.

Initially it looked TO was right as Hurd was the #3 WR on the 2007 team. But we did get a glimpse of Austin's potential.

Last year was a bit of a lost year for both of them due to injury.

This year Austin has finally taken off. The things that really separate Austin from the other WRs are:

1. He has great football speed. I don't know if he is accomplished in track but on the field he has an extra gear and looks like a 4.3 guy.

2. He runs like a football player - by this I mean he runs with short powerful strides which allows for better balance.

3. He cuts very sharp.

4. He catches the ball cleanly with his hands.

5. He seems to run through the ball. Most WRs have a bit of a hesitation after they catch the ball but Miles seems to run through it. I think this is why he has had so much YAC. The guy who he actually reminds me of (not that I'm saying he is going to have as good a career) is Jerry Rice who also had this same ability.

I think I read somewhere that Miles ran track in high school.

Miles Austin was a two-year letterman at Garfield, N.J., High School, where he played wide receiver and defensive back.

As a senior, recorded 75 tackles and 10 interceptions.

Also played basketball, finishing with 1,028 career points, and was a member of the track and field team, for which he recorded the second-longest javelin throw in Bergen County history (214'8).

That's because he followed TO around like a puppy dog... And later, Roy and Crayton joined in on the act.

Mosley always said that Miles made a point to stay above the fray and away from the clubhouse lawyering and politicking that was going on with TO.

Oh, and yesterday Mosley had an interesing factoid on Miles. I think he still holds the New Jersey record for the javelin. Pretty cool. (Edit, Dooms just posted that... Guess Mosley was wrong about the record. But 2nd best is still pretty impressive.)
