This to me is a pipe-dream.

I don't see the motivation involved for them. Because they went ahead and paid the going rate for their other WR, all of a sudden RW is a luxury they can't afford..?

Ridiculous.

Once they dump that $15 mil dead cap after 2008, they will be in much better shape to re-sign him. And depending on 2009, whether it is or is not a capped year..they should be in even better position to keep him.

There's a good chance that if he were to hit free agency, they'd lose him with no compensation. Another factor is that with Mike Martz gone, the Lions are planning a more run-based offense.

What we need to do is draft a young WR and let's commit to getting him involved in the offense right away..period. We have been putting this off eversince the Joey Galloway trade where we overpaid for a needed WR.

I don't want to see us throw away the opportunity to AGAIN finally draft a quality WR and get him on this team. This is our year.

Just like we have done with Ware and Spears and Canty and others we drafted and started, let him have the #3 spot immediately and let him challenge Crayton over the course of the season to be #2.

We are in no better shape ourselves to be trading for a Roy Williams and then destroy OUR cap trying to fit him in.

Just draft one at #28 and let's get younger at the WR position and build this team somemore.

I don't have a problem with drafting a receiver, but there's certain to be a learning curve that wouldn't be there when acquiring a proven veteran. And it's not like Roy Williams is in any way old. The guy is in his prime. And with better coaching and a better supporting cast, he should excel.

Redball Express said:
People seem to think that now we HAVE to win a SB this season and therefore a huge trade for a vet WR is manditory to get to the next level.

I don't. What we need is more depth that should be lining up to be a starter in a year or two to keep this train rolling to the top at WR, RB and CB.

Sorry, but I'm about tired of 'building' and 'waiting until next year'. It's past time that this team start paying dividends, and that means a championship. Every year that goes by means more players getting older, salaries climbing, and more contracts expiring. It's past time that Jerry and the fans get what we're looking for.

Let's stick with the draft, keep the costs within reason as opposed to going to the trade or FA market and paying out the wazoo and keep ourselves moving forward like what has got us there so far and stay cap friendly for the future.

If we trade for and re-do RW's contract, I think the coming deals for Tnew, Ware, MBIII and several others that we will not want hitting the FA market will DEFINITELY be in jeopardy next year and the next.

Avoid this at all costs and draft the right guys and get them going.

Much easier said than done. And I think Jerry and many fans are running out of patience. Getting a wide receiver 'up and running' is wishful thinking. It doesn't happen - even with the great ones (not named Moss).

Roy Williams wants to get paid.

And why shouldn't he? He's a two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver who has led the league in receiving yards. His first three seasons were the most prolific in his team's history, and he has Hall of Fame potential.

What year did Roy Williams lead the league in receiving yards?

Roy Williams is a legitimate #1 WR. Those talking about drafting one=there is not a single WR in this draft that frankly looks like they will be as good as he is NOW. IF we can get him for our #22 then take it and RUN!

I'D LOVE TO BE FLY ON THE WALL IN JERRY'S OFFICE.

Because I'd love to know how much validity there is in this R. Williams trade talk.

Let me go on record once again, I love this trade. It would be huge for us.

Perhaps this is why I have a hard time seeing it happen. Williams is too good a player to give up for a late 1st rd pick.

And I dont buy into this Detroit must trade him theory.

Makes perfect sense to me, why can't Millen see that:rolleyes:

He see's it and we'll see it on draft day as RW will be traded to the boyz... I bet JJ knows this is gonna happen already. JJ and Millen spent alot of time together at the owners meetings.... JJ has got this under control!!!!!

I am just about of the opinion that Jerry will end up raising his bid to get something done...I could easily see Dallas dealing #22 for Roy Williams, depending on what is still available.

At #28, they probably aren't going to be getting much less of a player than they would at 22. In fact, they might even get the same player.

Knowing Jerry, and assuming he could get a deal done for Roy, I could almost see the team dealing out of the first round altogether for two seconds and target guys like Jamaal Charles, a second round corner, and/or a safety, and whatever else they like...

My other question (and this may have already been addressed other places) is what impact would getting a Roy Williams WR have on our cap?

There are a lot of guys on this team who will be looking to get paid after this season. I don't think all of them are coming back, but some of the guys seem to be priorities. Guys like TO, Ware, Newman, Canty, and Barber all come to mind. You might even throw Hamlin into that talk, although I suspect that one of the starting DBs isn't here after this season...

So is there room for all of this?

I think you're crazy because somehow you turn every post into a Darren McFadden post!

I love the idea of getting Roy but I would not give up a first for him. Especially 22. I just think that if we could get a very high second out of that first, Detroit would take it. If we could pull of a deal with Atlanta or Miami for there 2nd, I think we could then trade that second for Williams and Detroit would take it. That's what I believe. I mean, what choice would they really have?

If we ended up trading a 1st for Williams, I would definatly want another pick back from Detroit. Maybe an 09 3rd.

Former Texas Longhorn Roy Williams seeks big contract. Are the Cowboys interested?
Monday, April 14, 2008

The franchise tag would earn get him about $9 million in 2009 but the downside is that franchise deals are not guaranteed, meaning if Williams suffered a career-threatening injury, Detroit could release him without owing him another penny.

Where does this guy get his information from ?

Franchise tags are 100% guaranteed. If any player designated with a franchise tag gets injured during that year, his salary is paid in full.

I love the idea of putting together the dream team, but someone needs to tell me how Jerry will be able to pay Roy Williams, DeMarcus Ware, Marion Barber, Terrence Newman.. and how about Terrell Owens, who is sure to start his antics by mid-season since he's in the last year of his contract?

If someone can tell me how that gets done, then it sounds good to me.

Very, very carefully.

Not saying you're wrong, but how about if they want to go with a completely different philosophy on offense ( like they're rumored to be ) ? Why spend all that money on another WR who could fetch them valuable assets ( draft pick(s) ) in the trade market ?

Not to mention Williams has missed more games over the last 4 seasons than Anthony Henry has.

Roy Williams could also get them their needed Cover2 MLB, and that young defensive player would be a lot cheaper than Roy Williams...

Surely you can see why Detroit might be a little more interested than some people are letting on. Doesn't mean it will happen, but I guarantee it gets explored by Matt Millen and their coaches.

So if this is about (a) money and then (b) loyalty, there s nothing new under the sun.

Whom do you think has a greater need to go out and acquire a veteran probowl WR, the Cowboys or Eagles?

God forbid the Cowboys were to pull off a trade for Williams for anything less than a first round pick.

They'd have to dig a fricken moat around the NovaCare complex and prepare for a 100,000 fan siege.
