I dont see him physical enough to play in the box as a SS, I think he is in his correct position as a FS

In this scheme, you don't have to be physical to play SS. His primary role will be covering the flat on his side in zone, and manning up the tight end in man. He could also play a robber role, where he just roams in the middle of the field. Run support is required of any safety. He seems like a solid tackler.

Agreed fs is the right spot with flexibility to slide over to corner if needed. Expectations are certainly high for him and being able to focus on playing one position will benefit his development. I dont know if he will be the caliber of an Ed Reed, but he is a smart, physically gifted player and even if he develops into 75 to 80 percent of Reed he will be a very good player.

Gronk had 4 receptiondisrespecyards.. A 1000 yard pace.

Jones played him well but It's a big stretch to say that Jones "shut down" Gronk.

I dont think anyone can shut down Gronk.... Speed, size, and hands there is no corner or safety in the league that can matchup with him.

I seriously doubt we've seen the best of Byron Jones as yet. Rookie years for DBs are quite well known to be learning experiences far more often than highly productive ones. His overall value to the team, as well as his productivity, are yet to be fully demonstrated and realized. I believe it's fair to say that his ceiling is, without a doubt, yet to be proven. All we've seen thus far is reasonably encouraging signs for what's yet to come but his upside does seem fairly promising to me as a FS. The additional experience at one position should benefit him substantially.

Funny. I watched this video right before creating this thread...

Not much of a playmaker last year...that's for certain

Gronk had 4 receptions for 67 yards.. A 1000 yard pace.

2 of those catches was blatant offensive pass interference, and you also forgot to post his 0 td number that game. Next time watch the games instead of just posting numbers.

Jones was a first round pick so my expectations are high as they are with every first round pick. Honestly I wasn't all that impressed with his rookie year he got beat a number of times but he was being moved around. Reports are he's going to play safety and that's where he needs to stay.

Plenty of upside, probably have some growing pains to endure which is to be expected. Hope he learns to tackle low or he may get carried a bit. 3-4 picks is a possibility...

If he is replacing wilcox , then I would want to see him make tackles on pass plays where wilcox
let guys run by him for td's .
1 move in open field and they were by wilcox, so jones needs to make tackles, and then maybe a few ints
would be nice.

My expectation of him are high. It comes with being a 1st rd pick. I fully believe he has the physical ability to have success. I think it comes down to the mental aspect of the game and if he is willing to spend hours in the film room studying and breaking down opponents I think he will be highly successful in this league.

Jones is coming off a relatively impressive rookie season, Imo..showed a ton of versatility...played basically everywhere in the secondary..very smart kid...appears that he's moving to FS full time..what are your expectations for him for this season and why?

Do you think this guy will turn out to be a ball hawk at FS?

My expectations are not high. Seems like a smart athletic kid, but I didnt see anything resembling ball hawk or hitting machine. In fact, I dont recall him standing out at all. With the big need we have at CB you would have to think that him moving to safety has to be some what of a disappointment. IF the kid had great coverage skills, they would be using him there.

That is a pretty good breakdown. Describes it perfectly.

I agree. I think Dallas asked a lot of Jones playing him at times at CB and others at safety. I think getting him settled in at 1 spot so that he can put his full attention on the responsibilities he will have at FS will be a big benefit to him and this team. I think it is great he can play both spots but I think to be great at one position you need to have your focus on that position and all it entails
