Jones is coming off a relatively impressive rookie season, Imo..showed a ton of versatility...played basically everywhere in the secondary..very smart kid...appears that he's moving to FS full time..what are your expectations for him for this season and why?

Do you think this guy will turn out to be a ball hawk at FS?

If the DL can get pressure then I think he can be a very successful FS, if not then we hope he will be a ball hawk!!

My expectations are for him to develop a good feel for the FS position, be able to play man and various zone coverages as well as being able to tackle well. I expect him to be a good man coverage safety given his cornerback skills and given his athleticism, be able to play zone fairly well.

What I *hope* for is different. I believe he could be a dynamic defender that spends most of his time at FS, but can lock on great TE's like Gronk and Reed as well as big WR's such as Alshon Jeffrey and Brandon Marshall and be a great zone safety along the lines of an Earl Thomas (it's a tall order, but I think he has that type of ability).

If we want more turnovers and we want more pressure on the QB, it really starts with the DB's being able to switch between zone and man efficiently and that will allow them to cover things up more and with our DB's being able to tackle. You're not going to get pressure on the QB if your DB's are relegated to playing only man or only zone. The QB's too easily know where to go with the ball when that happens. And you can't force turnovers when QB's know what you're doing.

I like what Seattle does....they play mostly zone, but they play enough man to make opposing QB's struggle to figure out what exactly they are going to do. They'll plan press coverage all of the time and mostly bail out into different zone coverages. But they plan enough man that the opposing offense isn't quite sure what they are doing because they are pressing the receivers. And then they can switch up into Cover 1, Cover 2 and Cover 3 and once in a blue moon Cover 4...just enough to delay the offense's decision making and get the offense to go the wrong way.

I agree. I think Dallas asked a lot of Jones playing him at times at CB and others at safety. I think getting him settled in at 1 spot so that he can put his full attention on the responsibilities he will have at FS will be a big benefit to him and this team. I think it is great he can play both spots but I think to be great at one position you need to have your focus on that position and all it entails

Good stuff. Byron Jones has only begun to scratch the surface so far as absorbing all that the FS position entails in the pros. Asking a rookie to do what he did last year was far more than what most rookies could handle. Switching back and forth is tough on vets, let alone rookies. I'm not too concerned with him absorbing all the mental adjustments -- he's plenty smart enough to handle it but he sorely needs many reps to develop.

honestly?im excited, but not over expectant-jones was a 3rd round grade at highest on every board prior to the combine which iswhen he leaped into 1st round consideration.
so yeah while excited to see what he can do in a full season-i think itll be later on when we see what he really has given his 1st full season at safety

Unfortunately, we seem to be jinxed when it comes to the secondary. Not even a healthy Ramsay would excel in this black hole/devil's triangle of the Cowboys' secondary.
I can't figure what it is. Lack of toughess, lack of agility, coverage schemes or just plain bad luck. I hold not expectation of Jones. Any good things he does will be a welcomed surprise.

His world record broad jump is what got him to "leap" into the first round at least it appeared that way. They seemed to talk more about his broad jump than his football ability.

We've struggled to find defensive players period. At least the last 10 years or so.

Besides Demarcus Ware I can't remember of a pick we had I thought was going to be the next big thing. Maybe Roy Williams his rookie year with Woodson. Newman was like 25 years old so I knew he wasn't going to be an all time Cowboy. Lee is always hurt..

We really need Byron to come though for us in a bad way.

I'd like to see him get his first interception.

With his talent and athleticism combined with his intellegence and body of work from his first year, I expect him to at the very least consistently be in the right places at the right times. I expect him to take good angles and to pick three or four balls off minimum for the season.

If he does that, he'll automatically be better than anything we have had in the last 10 plus years at the position.

We'll see what happens. I think he can do it.

I have high expectations for Jones due to his intelligence, work ethic, and physical ability. I really like players like this and I think he'll grow more in the vein of a Sean Lee than a Claiborne.

I'm excited to have more players on the field that are intelligent and can see the field. Zeke, Romo, Lee, and Jones are players that will not just play their respective positions, but diagnose what the other team is doing and react accordingly.

Byron Jones hasn't tallied a single fumble recovery or forced fumble in any of his last 4 seasons of playing football. Not a single one.

Please keep in mind he was a rookie playing multiple positions last year. I read last week where Minn. Coach Zimmerman stated he doesn't like playing rookie CBs. he prefer they sit a year as well. I think with only having 1 position to worry about and this being year 2 we will see a progression. I am not predicting Pro Bowl caliber year but I think we will be pleased with the progress we see.

Keep him at FS, and I know I will get blasted for this, and put Wilcox at SS near the LOS.
