Back in the 1970s, did DFW people care more about the Cowboys

Back in the 1960s-1980s, did people in the Dallas-Fort Worth area care more about the Cowboys than people do today?

Or has the level of interest in the Cowboys in the local DFW area remained roughly as strong today as it was back then?

They cared more then. Isn't it obvious? Jerry Jones has drained this fanbase.

Hard to say but back then, there was not near the technology we have today for people to watch other teams play. The locals really only got Cowboy games with the Monday nighters.

Add in the internet, cable, smartphones, etc, it allows for those to pull for other teams today.

I think the Dal-Fort Worth area is still just as passionate but the above reasons showcase the negatives on a National stage.

Different eras, different times and ya can't really make a comparison. People are busier and have other things to do in this era, add in 17 years of no SuperBowls and some will get testy, but I think they still care.

Thanks! Good info.

You can't field a losing team with that many bad character guys over 17 years and expect it will not effect the fan base. The surprise is that Jerry sells any tickets to the games at all.

I feel bad for anyone too young to have seen the Cowboys as winners, and for the most part they did it with class -- thank you Tom Landry.

The surprise is people coming on here trying so hard to convince people that the fan base is dwindling.

With millions of Cowboys fans in America? Do the math.

The Cowboys of the 60's and 70's had their share of bad character guys, don't kid yourself.

It's the lack of playoff success that is the issue.

We should be the most-watched team in the league by a larger amount. Isn't it obvious? And the reason we're not is Jerry Jones. This is all self-evident and has already been well established. Why are we discussing it?

1966 through 1985:

208-77-1 record
20 straight winning seasons (still an NFl record)
18 playoff appearances
12 conference championship appearances
5 super bowl appearances
2 super bowl victories

2000 through 2012:

104-104 record
6 winning seasons (plus two .500 seasons)
4 playoff appearances
0 conference championship appearances
0 super bowl appearances
0 super bowl victories

what do you think?

This is exactly right. I run into so many fans that are just dejected and they all blame Jerry.

It's obvious. The only ones who say it's the same are the ones who are not from DFW.

That's very disingenuous. You need to combine 60-66 and 86-88 to Landry's era and add 89-99 to Jerry's era.

1960 through 1989:

250-162-6 record 0.598
20 straight winning seasons (still an NFl record)
18 playoff appearances
12 conference championship appearances
5 super bowl appearances
2 super bowl victories
20-16 playoff record .556

1989 through 2012:

206-178 record 0.536
13 winning seasons with 3 8-8 seasons .619 non losing record %
12 playoff appearances
4 conference championship appearances
3 super bowl appearances
3 super bowl victories

So 2 less SB appearance but 1 more victory over 24 years vs 29 years for Landry. 12 playoff appearances in 24 years vs 18 in 29 years.

So those numbers don't look nearly as bad. I'll give you Landry was better than any coach we ever had even Parcells by a fair shot. And Landry was more successful and consistent. But those are different times than today and I don't know how to compare them well now.

The NFL was not nearly as popular 30 years ago as it is today. I enjoy reading threads and articles on the topic of "the demise of the Cowboys fanbase" because it's all complete crap.

What people fail to realize is that society and people in general are different now. If my baseball team falls out of playoff contention long before the season is over, I quit watching their games. Yet, next season, I'm right there watching their games again.

The internet, mobile devices and video on demand have greatly impacted how we watch tv completely. I have not watched TV shows live on my tv in years other than Cowboys games. A lot of people subscribe to NFL Rewind to watch games when they want to watch them instead of having to fit into the NFL's schedule.

I realize that the haters need threads like these so they can all chime in with there "I'm right there with you, brother!" comments as if it will have some sort of psychological impact. I am sorry to disappoint you (and I can name most of you now who desperately need everyone to think like you do), but the rest of us still like our team and we will continue liking our team even if we go 1-15 again.

Fans come out in droves when their team is winning and they hide their gear and moan about the "Good ol' days, before <insert random target of blame here>" and hope to convince enough people to think they way they do in the flawed logic that it will make a difference.

Thanks, good info - much better than the usual criticize-Jerry or criticize-the-Cowboys stuff I was seeing this thread start to turn into.

Looks like you were looking for someone to tell you everything is ok then.

You ask a specific about the CITY OF DALLAS yet you take the opinions of those not from Dallas over myself and ufcrules who are actually from there. :laugh2:

Oh I know :D There are some though that live for threads like this because most of the fans have become immune or oblivious to the hate-filled threads they make.

The problem is that most of us who realize there are issues with the team cannot have a real discussion because responses go like this:

Fan asks, "What went wrong last year?"
Hater says, "Jerry's still alive and making decisions!"

Fan asks, "How can we improve this year?"
Hater says, "Have Jerry quit or fire himself!"

Fan asks, "What crazy thing have you done as a Cowboys fan?"
Hater says, "Keep supporting the team even though Jerry ruined it!"

Fan asks, "Who do you think we'll draft in the first round?"
Hater says, "Doesn't matter because Jerry is the owner!"

It's hard to have a decent conversation when people troll every thread like that and it is trolling when someone posts the same thing over and over in every similar thread.
