By the grace of God, Allah, or whoever, I have a week of vacation this week for the first time in my working career.

I am on a kick to go camping/backpacking for a couple of days, and live in DFW. Any good places I should go? Right now it looks like either Hill Country or maybe Ouachita. I'd like to drive no more than 5-6 hours to get there, but don't know what's around.

Thanks!

If you were coming to this area I could assist ya. I know a few good hikes. Before my wife and I had kids she used to take me to this one place I like hiking. A week later she'd come get me. I'd take water and apples and a couple of books. It was sure fun.

For Texas the best place to go to find parks is reserve America.

I know some good parks in the Austin and Houston area from growing up in one spot and cub scout in the other

http://www.reserveamerica.com

Most places have water and electricity some places have primitive camping if you want. Also the State and Federal park websites have information. I know one place has a primitive camping the only way to get fresh water is to carry on to the island.

I also forgot there is this site for other info

That's what I'm leaning toward, actually.

Been up there... beautiful country...

You may also want to go just a bit further north in Arkansas to Devil's Den State Park... beautiful as well and they have some cool caves...

Eastern Oklahoma is stunning as well... try just North of Beaver's Bend State Park...

I used to be an avid hiker and never got to hike the AT as I wanted too. I highly recommend subscribing to the magazine "Backpacker"... it is worth the money and you can get some great info on day hikes...

My last big hiking trip was in North Central Arkansas. I packed into the mountains for a week around Petit Jean State Park. I had my 3" portable LCD TV and watched the NBA playoffs nightly in my hammock...

It was a great trip...

Arkansas is the best kept secret in the country for camping/hiking/fly fishing...

You are also very close to the Cossatot which is great... If you have any questions, PM me. I've been all over the area several times...
