if the season started today, who would it be?

from their own depth chart, we don't have one. i imagine we'll pick one up before camp.

I respectfully disagree.

Berger has a little experience there. I know Proctor has practiced there and I've heard club officials mention that Free could also practice at center.

I know we signed an undrafted FA center out of Florida but I'm betting our backup center comes from Berger, Proctor or Free.

i don't think free has ever played or practiced at the position. i'm not sure berger has either.

yep, Proctor has been praticing as backup center. Along with that, the cowboys have metioned that Doug Free could play some center. Out of the football mags, it is mentioned that James Marten could play some center, now I am thinking, to me, he Marten would be just a tad too high playing center. Marten being all of 6-7 1/2 or 6-8, seems to me just too high to get down at center, underneath bigger smaller NTs that are 6-3, etc.
so, i am thinking they will keep looking at berger, proctor and possibly Doug Free.

I'd feel more comfortable with someone who has played it before. But I don't want to cut a very promising first or second year player either. I suppose they feel confident they either have one on the job or can get one.

Berger practiced at center with the Dolphins (or at least I was led to believe that).

I don't think Free has practiced at center but the Cowboy braintrust has mentioned that he could be tried there.

The problem is that we have too many decent players at the other line positions...

Adams
Kozier
Gurode
Davis
Columbo

McQ
Free
Marten
Proctor
Berger

That's 10 guys right there and my guess is that only 9 make the final roster.

We don't have the roster space for a true backup center.

Don't forget Trey Darilek, from THE University of Texas (at El Paso)...

I agree. Regardless of the depth chart, there won't be an official backup center. Based on Jerry and Co., they want guys who can play multiple positions on the line. Every guy on the line you mentioned in your other post sans Flo can play multiple positions. They're not going to bring in a guy who can only play one spot.

Those three you mentioned, seem the likeliest.

What worries me is that while we have some who have practiced at center, I do not think we have ANYONE who has PLAYED GAMES AT CENTER.

You'll have some after the exhibition season ends.

Kyle Young is too tall at 6'5", too slow at 5.62/40 yards, but no team seems to have signed him. Is he an improbable prospect?

Young may be slightly taller than Gurode, but about Al Johnson's height.
He also seems to have a very squat posture over the ball, with his butt angled high to the rear.
Maybe that simple butt posture problem is why no team wants him.

Young was dropping like a rock all season. I believe he was suspended because he quit going to class.

This thread made me chuckle.

I don't think Dallas will sign anyone else. I expect Berger or Procter will be the backup center.
