Barnwell: Defensive free agent tiers

ok, give me Dean and Lloyd at LB (load up on LBs).
Give me Josh Jobe (bring in someone who won a superbowl and can talk about it)
Give me Jalen Thompson and Coby Bryant.

I really don't much like any of the Edge Rushers for a lot of money. Hendrickson is a teaser, but injured and older. not worth the dollars. not the final missing piece.

then go into the draft with specific needs and players in mind (yes, I hate the approach but I think we can this year).

Figures this is the year Jerry decides to open the checkbook. Not only is it a weak class but arguably the worst in recent history.

If these signings don’t work out they will never sign another free agent again.

The better guys in this class are going to end up way overpaid. I still say Stephen puts his foot down in the end, and sadly, that may not be a bad thing for not only the longer run, but for now as well. Let’s see how it goes, but again…if these two get it wrong in a bad class, the gap between Carr and now will seem short.

Stephen puts his foot down? He is Jerry's secretary. Nothing more.

The only time Stephen gets his way is when Jerry allows it.

Jerry’s yacht set sail yesterday. So Needless to say we will shopping out of tier 7. Aka the left overs

The Cowboys exceeded expectations last season by having three Tier 5 linebackers as their starters.

Wilson, Murray, and Sanborn.....Masterclass in General Management.

I would rather keep our #20 than use it for an aging DE Max Crosby. He might not even fit Parker's defense.

I say we trade down and get more picks.
29 and still in his prime. Id rather take a proven commodity instead of a gamble, and even worse to double down and trade back. This team needs starters and last I checked Crosby is a top DE. Im sure if the Cowboys traded for him, Parker would be able to figure out a way to use a talented player like him.

So then Tier 7 is the one known as the Kenneth Murray tier. Backup who ain’t worth a darn and would have been charged with felony theft if idiot Jerry hadn’t marked his X on it.

Stephen is the cheap, conservative one, not Jerry. The way things have been approached sounds a lot more like the former.

Maybe, generally speaking, Jerry has stepped up lately and said we are going to spend more, and they will because he is the boss, but it sure looks to me as if the kid has been getting way for quite some time now.

Yeah, but he would cost us $30 million per year, while we could get three quality linebackers at $8–10 million per year each.

Crosby is not a fit for the Cowboys because he is more of a 4–3 defensive end rather than an outside linebacker.

With our 20th pick, we can trade down and possibly get Malachi Lawrence, R. Mason Thomas, or even Casius Howell in the second round, and then add another top-end safety or corner in the third who can start for us.

This is a very deep draft for corners, safeties, and linebackers. I would not trade draft picks for a 4–3 defensive end who doesn’t fit CP’s defense.

Certainly worthy of a place on the Ring of Shame, brought to you by Jerry Jones.

How come no one is talking about the CBs?

They have 2, pro bowl caliber players on the list there. Aside from those 2, any interest in bringing back Awuzie as a veteran presence who can play?

I’ve said it before: cornerbacks are the biggest need on our defense right now. With us lining up in nickel nearly 70% of the time, it’s easily one of the most important positions we need to upgrade.

The good news is that we have options. We can realistically add three to four solid, dependable corners through the draft, along with the guy from New Orleans, to really strengthen the group.

The guy left off the tier we always sign - Dumpster Dive Surprises.
Yeah, that's no joke.

Funny thing about it is the best free agents we've brought in in recent years besides Williams and Clowney are from the lowly CFL (Turpin + Aubrey)!

Bosa would fit great here, as run stopper. But he's getting up there in age.

Man did Diggs fall fast! Barely made the list. Just 2-3 years ago, I thought we might be set at corner for a decade with Diggs and Bland.

It's hard to get a full grasp. I do think Jerry has over ridden Stephen on coaching hires.

I think your last paragraph seems to be the case, but again, no way to really grasp full picture
