just back from the game...Wade shouldnt have much problem getting extremely mad for quite some time...it was basically a night of giant cow poop:

1) OL, horrendous...they got slapped around all night...Columbo and Adams appeared to be the two worst, but none of them played "well"...numerous penalties, whiffs and terrible run blocking...Columbo and Adams reminded me of Petitti/Tucker tonight...if Columbo doesnt improve pretty quick, they might have to think about McQuistan at RT...his run blocking is just as good and his pass protection is alot better

2) defense, pretty lame...I couldnt tell if some of it was because they were pretty vanilla or if it was just really bad play...the CB's had a really bad night, but they seemed intent on playing 8-10 yds off man coverage all night and Houston abused us with short ins all night..didnt see alot of blitzing either, but we made almost no plays at or behind the LOS all nigth after making tons the first two games..run defense was horrendous

3) really lousy tackling all night

4) Romo played bad...I havent seen his overall numbers and I'm sure some will say "his numbers were good!!!" but he wasnt...he made a couple good throws but he made some really lousy ones, along with several questionable decisions..he missed a couple of tds tonight, and the int was pathetic..no excuse to underthrow that ball at all...just lazy mecahnics, which he displayed alot tonight...Garrett and Wilson should be all over Romo about some of the stuff he did tonight

5) havent seen reports yet, but Julius Jones and Kevin Burnett both left the games with injuries, both looked like ankle/lower leg injuries...sounded like Burnett was the bigger concern...I know Burnett didnt come back (didnt even see him on the sideline) and pretty sure Jones didnt come back in after he limped off...I think Burnett had our only sack of the night..he's having a tremendous preseason and would be a big loss if he misses time..

6) I know its preseason, but there's just no excuse for a few of the call/no calls we saw tonight...I quit counting how many times Ware was held, but on one particular play he was held by TWO guys at the SAME time, and still didnt get the call...obvious block in the back on the TD return...no call for 15yd spearing/leading with the head on Witten's TD...still not sure what Reeves did to garner an interference call on that last Houston TD series, ball looked like it was intended more for him than the receiver...it was also the only play he was close to a receiver all night

7) Grammatica probably lost the kickers job tonight, although they might find a taker for a trade

overall it was a disappointment...Houston does not have a good OL or a good front 7 on defense, and we got hammered up front on both sides of the ball...I'm pretty sure they game planned us, but ultimately thats no excuse for some of the stuff we saw...this was supposed to be a tune up type game for the regular season and instead looked like a shoddy, mail it in type effort that you'd expect to see in the final preseason game

Brad johnson said they did everything, they blitzed and threw the whole package at them and they didnt handle it well.

Romo missed some throws and the o-line was lousy all over, but as I have said in a couple of threads, marcus spears is a serious concern, he has no pass rush skills at all and he is getting manhandled again like last year in the running game.

they were blocking down and sending the guard right at him and he couldnt handle it. He looks like he is regressing.

I'm not worried about Spears...he played really good the other two preseason games..he was no worse tonight than Canty, Ratliff or Hatcher...all of whom were invisible...Ferguson didnt get the same push tonight that he had the previous two either

he wasnt the only reason they were running all over us...nobody showed up really in the front 7, save maybe James and Burnett (who left early with injury)...Ware seemed like his usual self, but refs have to start giving him some of these holding calls

Sounds like Kubiak getting a little revenge on behalf of his old team. John Lynch must have called him up to tell him we needed to pay for breaking the "code of ethics" :laugh2:

These damn schemes keeping messing with Spears natural ability. :laugh2:

It makes me sick that we could have had Steven Jackson if BP didn't trade out of the 1st and take JJ in the 2nd. Spears was taken w/ Buffalo's pick so we'd still have been able to take Ware when we did...

It also makes me sicker how BP made the OL *worse*. At least Jerry did a decent job of this before he came.

Yah-BP *wasn't* Great in choosing talent-he got a few steals here and there(MB3, T. Thompson, Romo, Ratliffe, etc)-but overall, he HARDLY built a championship-caliber team.

Spears did not have a good game at all tonight, they ran to his side and he did not respond ever. He was a guy I thought was getting better, and this is just a pre-season game, and he looked dominant the last couple of weeks, so I won't get him too bad.

I'm shocked that our run D played so poorly, and this was the same scheme Denver runs.

I'm almost ready to call Flozell washed up, cause these last 2 games, he's been getting handled, and this is after having a subpar season last season.

I personally thought Romo had a solid game... Several times he escaped a would be sack and possible fumble, and yeah he made mistakes (as all quarterbacks do) but his good stuff out-weighed his bad stuff IMO. (except the underthrow to TO :) )

I assume your sarcasm is aimed at my comment that BP "traded out of the first", meaning Jerry traded out of the first, not BP. You may well be right that BP had no say-so in this at all, but I am not so sure.

I'd still rather have Jackson instead of Spears. And if this team goes 9-7 again, it'll be hard to argue that BP left the team in good shape...

"Clunker" is an excellent, succinct summation of that game, Dave... it's really all that needs to be said...

2 good preseason games isn't enough to overturn two underachieving seasons since he's been here.

Oh, but it was Zimmer/Parcells fault.

Our OL started going down hill in 96 and it showed badly in 97. JJ's lousy drafting for many years including poor attention to OL needs. He did draft Larry Allen in 94 but nothing until Adams in 98. It was then 02 before Gurode and it took him until 06 to come on as a starting center. So Jones does deserve a lot of the OL blame but Parcells didn't do much better either. His best efforts to drafting McQuistan. Kosier & Colombo were FA signings.

I realize it takes a while for young OL players to develop and continuity at that position is also important. But OL sure didn't inspite awe last night. Maybe McQuistan will be starting sooner rather then later.

sad part is they were bound to come out flat after the way they played in the first 2 preseason games. The important part is to see how they bounce back. I am anxious to see the replay on NFL network today

Excellent point bro.

I think whether you liked parcells or not, there is one thing all cowboys fans have to agree with the one thing he worried about all the time.

Maturity.

He repeatedly said he wasnt sure this team was ready to take that next step because he wasnt sure if they were mature enough to handle it.

Tonight was another night that looked like they thought the other team was going to lay down for them and let us push them around. I mean didnt this game from an emotional standpoint look like the giants game in december 05? it did to me.

I never understood why on the road in the east games this team looked weak, scared or uninterested. Its as if they dont perk up until it is the 11th hour and are losing.

I think that has to do with maturity. And along with Romos play and the defenses ability to get off the field on third down will be the biggest factors in this season.

Instead of making the same mistakes and playing emotionless the team should be going up a level and making less mistakes and being the aggressor.

I dont take that much from the game as some, just like I didnt with the denver game. A little bit of me agrees with hostile that it was a good thing and this will help if this team really does want to get better.

That is the one thing none of us can measure or estimate until kickoff, maturity and desire. And much like Parcells last year Wade phillips is going to be wondering the same thing, how much does this team want it.

We will find out starting on the ninth.
