Wow, I honestly didn't think they'd release him. I thought they were sticking with him no matter what. Mild shocker.

I have no interest in him being a Cowboy however.

Bears say goodbye to troubled defensive tackle
By Larry Mayer

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears stood by and supported Tank Johnson throughout a series of transgressions, but violating the club’s no-tolerance policy cost him his job.

The Bears on Monday waived the troubled defensive tackle, who was pulled over and arrested by police in Arizona at 3:30 a.m. Friday.

“We are upset and embarrassed by Tank’s actions last week,” said general manager Jerry Angelo. “He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn’t, and we have decided to move on.”

Johnson was released from Cook County Jail May 13 after serving 60 days for a probation violation stemming from a gun charge. On June 3, he was suspended by the NFL without pay for the first eight games of the regular season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

While Johnson was in jail, he was visited by several members of the Bears organization including Angelo, coach Lovie Smith, chairman of the board Michael McCaskey and several teammates.

“A lot of people within our organization gave extra time and energy to support Tank: players, coaches and our front office,” Smith said. “We did our best to establish an environment for him to move forward. Ultimately, Tank needed to live up to his side of the deal.”

Dallas does not need the headache of an idiot who can't stay out of trouble. Chicago gave him a chance and he has blown it once again.

"He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life, but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn't and we have decided to move on," general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement.

Give credit to the Bears. They are messing around one bit. Keep him out of Dallas.

Well, if you say "no tolerance" you really have to bring down the hammer -- otherwise it is meaningless.

That said, no way he comes here. Say hello to the newest Oakland Raider!

Sounds like they were genuinely dissappointed in him. They stuck by him through that whole first ordeal, it must've been like a slap in the face for them after he got into trouble so soon after being released from jail.

I wonder if the Bears have a little inside knowledge on the blood tests. Maybe tank came out and told them how the test would get returned thinking they would show some mercy......

We could really use some help at DT, great addition for our nickel packages, and could maybe even come relieve Jason a bit.

I say yes.

Haha! gotcha...

I wonder if the Titans will consider this method to deal with Pacman Jones. As a resident of Tenn., I am tired of Jones giving the state a bad name.

Dallas does not need a player who stays in the court of law on the team.

Skins need anything on the DL.

...comes back with a disappointing result wouldn't he be in for more suspension time?

A team who picks him up will have to ride along with a bored Tank until he is allowed on the field again.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Given Johnson's affection for firearms, I think he and Sean Taylor would have a lot in common.

Are teams allowed to dump a guy who is under contract for something like this? I thought the league had to be the source of punishment for substance abuse... enlightenment, please?

If the league is truly wanting to get rid of this element then no team should sign the guy. Adam Jones should be released as well and never signed again.

People act as if it is a person's right to play in the NFL but it is not. The NFL is under no obligation to give anyone a job, period, regardless of how talented that person might be.

The sooner these type of people are let go and forced to look for employment in another line of work the sooner this will go away. If a guy knows that he could be fired and never hired gain by any team the less likely they will be to continue to live the lifestyle.

I am hopeful that the NFL will change its drug policy from a series of fines and increasing suspensions to more of a nearly zero tolerance policy. I don't think they will but they should.

If you want to do drugs, hang around with your thug friends at the strip clubs, and other assorted adolescent activities then you are free to work at McDonalds or Burger King but you are not welcome in the NFL. That should be the message to every player.
