Being a year away will depend on this

Are we a year away from being a playoff team again? IMO that will depend on one simple NFL truth: Have a great off-season that is planned, proactive and focused.

Unfortunately our GM often foolishly says., “I am comfortable with ambiguity”. Which is a good quality for businessmen. It’s a bad philosophy when trying to build an NFL roster that is capable of winning playoff games. Plan and work it in advance. Not at midseason.

Winning three games in a row this last month has been a nice change. But honestly, we have been depending on having some post trade deadline miracle similar to the 2018 post Amari Cooper trade. Completely retooling your defense at midseason through trades and expecting that to turn you into a team capable of winning 8 straight? That requires a miracle.

Once again, team success in the NFL requires having a great off-season. The last two off-seasons were two of the worst in the last 30 years.

Are we a year away? IMO it will mostly depend on the quality of the next off-season. Planning is always greater than ambiguity when the goal is NFL team success.

I don't disagree about the off season.Hopefully they'll be active @ safety. We have to reinforce the middle of the field

Bob, we know what Jerry is going to do so don’t get your hopes up. Pickens just gave Jerry a reason to screw around with his negotiations and the board will back the owner. We have two first round picks and during the offseason that is all the stooges will be talking about. That and pies. We have been average since Romo and we will remain the same. Jerry don’t want to compete with these new age front offices.

Therein lies the problem with our FO. They are none of these things. At least, it's been that way for the last several years.

I think a lot will depend on the Joneses admitting their mistake in hiring Eberflus.

If they can’t admit that, and try to keep him around next year, even a huge influx of players won’t be enough.

Agreed Mary. And when I think of a great, planned off-season it must include knowing what kind of talent to build around the stars. It’s not just adding talent. It must be the right kind of talent.

This FO has far too often been reactive. And worse, they act like fantasy football players rather than a real NFL FO that knows what it’s doing.

  • Must improve linebacker and corner. Won't object either if BPA in the draft happens to be a Safety.
  • Have another RB ready just in case we re-sign Javonte and he pulls a Sequon on us. It ain't happening with Blue if they still won't give him snaps.
  • I don't see how we can spend another high draft pick on the OLine. They're all young except the biggest liability Steele, so have hope they can improve playing together another year. I would just cut Steele and replace his contract with a steadier vet.
  • Think long and hard about re-signing Pickens. Dude makes plays, but he showed what made him a liability in Pittsburgh last night. Let's see what he brings the rest of the year.
  • How to replace the void left by Micah Parsons and outside pressure? No idea. Maybe trading a future draft pick just like we did with Quinnen. EZ has one side for sure, but we need another homerun sack threat like #11.
  • If Dak can't handle the playoff pressure next year, find a new QB.

My worry, is we are a few pieces away from contending.

However, there is going to be A LOT of overturn next season.

RT - Steele is gone. You will need to fill this and Thomas does not look great.
DE - Clowney, Houston, likely gone. You have EZE an Fowler
MLB - Wilson looks average. Murray is trash.
S - Wilson and Hooker likely gone.

So you essentially need to bring back Williams and Pickens. Then upgrade RT, DE, MLB, FS, SS. It's possible with a solid draft and 1-2 free agents.

What really worries me is that this offense should be great on a consistent basis. It shouldn't be a concern but it is, and that puts doubt in my mind that even if the defense is further improved it might still not be enough.

O line dude
our tackles got owned yesterday

no offense can hold up its end that way

Our front office did nothing but regress our defense last off season.
We made bad trades and dumpster dived.
This defense is exactly what this front office deserves.

Houston has another year, Fowler is a FA. Agree with your upgrade list, probably need another RB as well because Blue looks like a complete bust. Ideally turn the two first round picks into 3 picks. Hoping to get a starting LB, Safety and a rotational DE out of the draft.

We are only a year away if you keep the stars we have, all of them. Then add more in the draft. We are a few players away, not a year away
Every team is a few players away even SB contenders. It’s not gonna ever be perfect. What you don’t have you are gonna have to make up for it elsewhere. But we can’t make up for piss poor play at linebacker. Just can’t.

Yeah, I know, but we have the resources there. It should be good enough to be able to overcome missing one starter. And if you need to go max protect then do it. Having CD and GP on the outside should be enough.

Left tackle was a problem last night.

They aren’t easy to find. They aren’t cheap, and anyone good requires a top 20 pick.

Considering the obvious needs on defense, the possible need to replace Pickens, etc…they can’t go spending another high pick on the OL.

We actually have a very capable LT on the team but seems as if most of y’all want the “all pro guard” which doesn’t matter when the LT is a turnstile.
