Being a year away will depend on this

Jerry has to put up or shut up this offseason. The NFL is wide open right now and this team is close.

He says his biggest regret was not doing more to get Romo a ring and he is about to repeat it with Dak. This team has a ton of potential if they are willing to be aggressive this offseason and ignore the long-term CAP ramifications of doing so.

Let's see if Jerry is really a gambler and has the stones to push his chip all-in or if he is just another snake oil salesmen selling false hope.

There’s two ways to be playoff relevant: Being lucky for a year or building a roster through proactive vision and planning.

The rams for example have built multiple teams that have won a lot of playoff games including two NFC championships and a SB. With two different QBs.

I remember seeing lots of Cowboys fans laughing at the rams trading lots of draft picks and going “all in” on free agency. Many said the rams would be bad for years. Meanwhile their top shelf GM Les Snead polishes his Lombardi while at 9-3 this year they are again in contention for the top seed in the NFC.

Planning matters. Along with taking calculated risks. Earth to the Jones family….

Every team is a few players away even SB contenders. It’s not gonna ever be perfect. What you don’t have you are gonna have to make up for it elsewhere. But we can’t make up for piss poor play at linebacker. Just can’t.
I think LB, a true free safety with cover skills are must haves. I’m assuming Williams won’t be extended so another edge will be needed. But if we keep our DT trio together and Perkins, the rest is doable with what we have in picks

New DC…..don’t think Schotty is that guy either
I’m ok with shotty but I’m not sold on our Dc. Shotty is an offensive guy. I don’t know if he had any input on our DC but generally the HC for Jerry gets who Jerry wants, not who they want. We need a more aggressive scheme to get pressure. We’ve had our secondary beat up most of the year but they aren’t zone guys

My worry, is we are a few pieces away from contending.

However, there is going to be A LOT of overturn next season.

RT - Steele is gone. You will need to fill this and Thomas does not look great.
DE - Clowney, Houston, likely gone. You have EZE an Fowler
MLB - Wilson looks average. Murray is trash.
S - Wilson and Hooker likely gone.

So you essentially need to bring back Williams and Pickens. Then upgrade RT, DE, MLB, FS, SS. It's possible with a solid draft and 1-2 free agents.
Exactly. This is why we need to be players in free agency for proven defensive commodities that can come in and take charge right away. Not second wave or bargain basement free agents, real ones. Otherwise we'll just hope for lottery wins through the draft and that's not going to get it done.

Are we a year away from being a playoff team again? IMO that will depend on one simple NFL truth: Have a great off-season that is planned, proactive and focused.

Unfortunately our GM often foolishly says., “I am comfortable with ambiguity”. Which is a good quality for businessmen. It’s a bad philosophy when trying to build an NFL roster that is capable of winning playoff games. Plan and work it in advance. Not at midseason.

Winning three games in a row this last month has been a nice change. But honestly, we have been depending on having some post trade deadline miracle similar to the 2018 post Amari Cooper trade. Completely retooling your defense at midseason through trades and expecting that to turn you into a team capable of winning 8 straight? That requires a miracle.

Once again, team success in the NFL requires having a great off-season. The last two off-seasons were two of the worst in the last 30 years.

Are we a year away? IMO it will mostly depend on the quality of the next off-season. Planning is always greater than ambiguity when the goal is NFL team success.
Only problem is, there are 10 teams that are better than us and are 1 year away as well.

I don’t know about the playoffs but this team will be nowhere close to competing for a SB in a year.

If we get NE's schedule this next year we will make the playoffs.

We’re probably however many years Jerry has left.

Hopefully we get lucky

We're AT LEAST two years away. That's if everything goes well and Jerry leaves the HC alone. That's a big if.

After 30 seasons of playoff irrelevancy, you can rest assured that Jerry will make huge changes next season. Or perhaps in a few seasons.

Well I guess we should be happy not going into the offseason screaming for a DT... again and again and again.

I spose that's something.

I pride myself on learning people/watching people. I know exactly what Jerry will do after nearly 40 years of watching this fool. He will make a lot of BIG promises. He'll get all Cowboys fans happy during the summer, Cowboys fans will come back, pack out the stadium, we'll start out fast, or at some point get hot, maybe even make the play offs, and we'll be back in here complaining in 27, 28, 29, 30 and so on. This is my Cowboys groundhog life for 3 decades.

You have paid attention and taken good notes in class.
