Being a year away will depend on this

I pride myself on learning people/watching people. I know exactly what Jerry will do after nearly 40 years of watching this fool. He will make a lot of BIG promises. He'll get all Cowboys fans happy during the summer, Cowboys fans will come back, pack out the stadium, we'll start out fast, or at some point get hot, maybe even make the play offs, and we'll be back in here complaining in 27, 28, 29, 30 and so on. This is my Cowboys groundhog life for 3 decades.
As we all sit back wide eyed and open mouthed as Jerry drafts a TE in the 1st.

We could always use another "Tyler" on the o-line.

Speaking of "Tylers", we get a good idea by the proliferation of the name "Tyler" of just how much cultural impact Fight Club had. Nobody was named "Tyler" in the 80s.

Would need to resign Williams and Pickens, rework the 3 DTs and Dak and maybe Lamb and would be nice to resign Clowney. If we did that, freed up some money and cut Diggs (seems far gone) and Steele, we would need help at DE, LB, S, CB and OT. Two firsts on defense for SURE. And then would need a couple good free agents for the rest as we don’t pick until later after that. Don’t know if we can get all we need in one off season, and that’s with signing who we have and good cap management to get like 3 free agents.

My worry, is we are a few pieces away from contending.

However, there is going to be A LOT of overturn next season.

RT - Steele is gone. You will need to fill this and Thomas does not look great.
DE - Clowney, Houston, likely gone. You have EZE an Fowler
MLB - Wilson looks average. Murray is trash.
S - Wilson and Hooker likely gone.

So you essentially need to bring back Williams and Pickens. Then upgrade RT, DE, MLB, FS, SS. It's possible with a solid draft and 1-2 free agents.
I want Clowney back, he’s good in both run and pass rush, he’s worth bringing back if he wants to for not a fortune….one less other free agent (even if we spend a first on a DE).

Need to STOP zone. Period.
We just need a new D coordinator…..he is NOT good. Need someone who can adjust and scheme opponent specific, which Flus did NOT do yesterday. The lions run timing with routes that kill zone, and we played zone like 86% of the time with DBs playing off and not disrupting routes which we needed to mess the timing up…..got cooked because of it.

Are we a year away from being a playoff team again? IMO that will depend on one simple NFL truth: Have a great off-season that is planned, proactive and focused.

Unfortunately our GM often foolishly says., “I am comfortable with ambiguity”. Which is a good quality for businessmen. It’s a bad philosophy when trying to build an NFL roster that is capable of winning playoff games. Plan and work it in advance. Not at midseason.

Winning three games in a row this last month has been a nice change. But honestly, we have been depending on having some post trade deadline miracle similar to the 2018 post Amari Cooper trade. Completely retooling your defense at midseason through trades and expecting that to turn you into a team capable of winning 8 straight? That requires a miracle.

Once again, team success in the NFL requires having a great off-season. The last two off-seasons were two of the worst in the last 30 years.

Are we a year away? IMO it will mostly depend on the quality of the next off-season. Planning is always greater than ambiguity when the goal is NFL team success.
If we can run the ball better it will dramatically improve our defense.

I just can't see our D improving enough to make a serious run, by just adding through the draft.

It will ultimately come down to how much cap space Jerry wants to free up and how he chooses to spends it.

We have to sign Pickens, Aubrey and most likely Williams.

Pickens is going to want $35M, tagging him will hurt adding more FA's.

Aubrey will be the highest paid Kicker most likely around $10M, if Jerry does not pay it, someone will.

Williams is going to take the best offer he gets and he knows we have no one else on our roster. So his agent will leverage that.

If we part ways with Steele, we need a new Tackle. If we part ways with Diggs we need a new CB. We also need a LB, Safety and a DE and we don't have many draft picks.

The ultimate question becomes will Jerry go all in and create the necessary cap space needed to make a dominant defense and make a serious run.

Unless a nuke is dropped on Highland Park on Christmas morning, we won’t sniff a championship. I hate to be morbid, but this family is never selling their money printer, and they’ll never hire a competent person to run the team.

All true as you said we have 40 years of evidence on the maniac that runs the asylum. What happens to hard core fans like us is numbness. You get numb after so many decades of watching Jerry dominate every facet of this organization and there’s no end in sight. It’s broken and no one’s coming to change Jerry’s defiant vice grip on our team.

We’ll see how they address defense in draft and or FA along with ability to resign offensive acquisitions.

But id say we wasted a year with Dak healthy. And everything we do next year could all be for naught if he misses several games or knocked out.

I disagree about ambiguity being a quality in business. Good leadership eliminates ambiguity. Clarity of mission, purpose and responsibility right down to the lowest man on the totem poll is essential for exceptionalism. The fact that the Cowboys plan is such a murky mess is one reason why they don't make it to the top of the ranks in the NFL.

It is also the reason why their offseason are so ineffective lately. I completely agree the offseason is the time to put your plan into action. It is the time to assess and resolve. But this means leadership needs to get everyone on mission. They need to agree on their weaknesses and strength and how to improve the roster. The Cowboys have not given any indication that this has happened in the past, and as you said, waiting until midway through the season to recognize the problems and try to resolve them with impulsive trade moves, is too late.

We fans knew the DT rotations was the weakest in the NFL and was a big reason the defense could not stop the run. We've known it for years. How could it be so clear to us but not to Jerry and Co.? It is clear someone this year bent his ear on this subject and convinced him to do something. That is a good sign but not indicative of a plan or strategy to build the team. When you have a leaky dam that bursts forcing you to fix it before everyone drowns, that is not a plan.

Seems like we're always 'A year away'
Yup, because we keep drafting Schooners and Trystens and Jaylons and Kelvins and Coxes and LVEs and Mazis. That is a ton of wasted high round draft picks, and the worst part is that a simple analyses would've shown it before we drafted them. No hindsight needed here.

I tried to be upset that we lost to DET, I really tried.

I think a lot will depend on the Joneses admitting their mistake in hiring Eberflus.

If they can’t admit that, and try to keep him around next year, even a huge influx of players won’t be enough.
I think the play is Riley around themselves, when we played the Eagles, and the Chiefs, but that beat them up physically, and then when you need a coach to put you in a better position, he failed. I totally agree.

It could be argued whether we are a year away. Yes we've had some very encouraging performances, however, we've failed miserably away from home, and wont be beating a team with a winning record away from AT........
........Then again our weaknesses are easily identified and overcome, IF JERRY, as you say, PLANS AND IS PREPARED TO GO ALL-IN. Watching Brugler/Helman, they were saying there is possibly a number of teams willing to draft down.....especially in exchange for 2027 (stacked draft) picks . This may be the year to draft up and get the Arvell Reese difference maker.

In Dak's second year we were 'a year away '

In Dak's third year we were 'a year away '
