Being a year away will depend on this

I disagree about ambiguity being a quality in business. Good leadership eliminates ambiguity. Clarity of mission, purpose and responsibility right down to the lowest man on the totem poll is essential for exceptionalism. The fact that the Cowboys plan is such a murky mess is one reason why they don't make it to the top of the ranks in the NFL.

It is also the reason why their offseason are so ineffective lately. I completely agree the offseason is the time to put your plan into action. It is the time to assess and resolve. But this means leadership needs to get everyone on mission. They need to agree on their weaknesses and strength and how to improve the roster. The Cowboys have not given any indication that this has happened in the past, and as you said, waiting until midway through the season to recognize the problems and try to resolve them with impulsive trade moves, is too late.

We fans knew the DT rotations was the weakest in the NFL and was a big reason the defense could not stop the run. We've known it for years. How could it be so clear to us but not to Jerry and Co.? It is clear someone this year bent his ear on this subject and convinced him to do something. That is a good sign but not indicative of a plan or strategy to build the team. When you have a leaky dam that bursts forcing you to fix it before everyone drowns, that is not a plan.
Very well said.

I think a lot will depend on the Joneses admitting their mistake in hiring Eberflus.

If they can’t admit that, and try to keep him around next year, even a huge influx of players won’t be enough.
Unfortunately, Jerry seems to prioritize coaches that he is “ comfortable “ with over
Competence. He basically lucked into Brian schottenheimer

I want Clowney back, he’s good in both run and pass rush, he’s worth bringing back if he wants to for not a fortune….one less other free agent (even if we spend a first on a DE).
He was surely missed in the lions game.

I tried to be upset that we lost to DET, I really tried.
I get it. It’s a different feeling decades from winning consecutive playoff games, for sure and for me it’s total numbness.

It’s also interesting to see select fans suggesting Jerry should be considered as NFL executive of the year, after a three game winning streak lol. Pats have won 11 in a row so perhaps their GM is a better candidate than the guy who blinds his own players lol.

New DC…..don’t think Schotty is that guy either
Agree, too conservative of a play caller settling for field goals on the road is a recipe for disaster.

Eberflus shouldn't be an option next year

Perhaps, but Jerry won’t allow his coach to have much power over anything, which is why it can be difficult to evaluate our head coach.

Settling for 63 and two 55 yard FGs is a blessing that Dallas has the best K I’ve ever seen. What were they supposed to do?

Yes . That is very true. It’s almost like the cowboys have two head coaches
Jerry makes a lot of the decisions an NFL head coach makes. He has been our phantom hc for years. Wade Phillips was not hired until Jerry named Jason .500 Garret as offensive coordinator. Jerry has the power to hire and fire, not the Dallas hc. Jerry signs free agents without his hc even knowing about it in some cases.

TheTicket Dallas Sports radio morning host Craig Miller said that Jerry should just put a whistle on and just assume his role as hc on the sidelines since he makes most of the decisions. But he can’t do that since he needs a hc to pay for all his failures as a part time “GM”.

Great post!

And how much more salary cap money would we have to spend if Jerry negotiated in March? We overpaid for Lamb, Dak, Zeke, and coming soon George “crazy brain” Pickens. Jerry bungled the Parsons deal when he could had 31 teams bidding for him in March but he waiting until almost opening day to deal him.

I’ve seen this movie before and it ends the same way. Business as usual with Jerry making emotional roster decisions like a teenager, a disturbed teenager.

Are we a year away from being a playoff team again? IMO that will depend on one simple NFL truth: Have a great off-season that is planned, proactive and focused.

Unfortunately our GM often foolishly says., “I am comfortable with ambiguity”. Which is a good quality for businessmen. It’s a bad philosophy when trying to build an NFL roster that is capable of winning playoff games. Plan and work it in advance. Not at midseason.

Winning three games in a row this last month has been a nice change. But honestly, we have been depending on having some post trade deadline miracle similar to the 2018 post Amari Cooper trade. Completely retooling your defense at midseason through trades and expecting that to turn you into a team capable of winning 8 straight? That requires a miracle.

Once again, team success in the NFL requires having a great off-season. The last two off-seasons were two of the worst in the last 30 years.

Are we a year away? IMO it will mostly depend on the quality of the next off-season. Planning is always greater than ambiguity when the goal is NFL team success.
How many years does Jerry have left to live? That plus one is likely the minimum for how many years away we are.

Yup, because we keep drafting Schooners and Trystens and Jaylons and Kelvins and Coxes and LVEs and Mazis. That is a ton of wasted high round draft picks, and the worst part is that a simple analyses would've shown it before we drafted them. No hindsight needed here.
Totally agree and don't forget the wasted picks on the trades for Lance & Mingo. You could even throw Pickens in there if they don't keep him around.

Kraft should be owner of the year. He quickly cut bait on a bad coaching hire and went out and got the best coach on the market, and now look what they're doing.

Jerry would (will) do the exact opposite - double down on his mistake by defending his bad hire, then make dumb trades like Lance and Mingo to try to support his bad decision. All because of ego, selfishness, and "comfortability."

you are correct. And dont forget he unloaded his first round QB after a few years, realizing the team made a mistake. And then, they spent an even higher first round pick on another QB.
Jerry's ego doesnt allow this. He just continues trying to pound that square peg.......

The last time Jerry made this kind of decision was when he hired Parcells and let him rebuild the football team and front office.

He'll won't do that again as long he lives.
