Belichick on Tyron Smith

If people were criticzing the Smith selection, then they obviously forget how bad Columbo was, and how much a dire need tackle was for us. JJ Watt is great, but Smith was incredible his rookie year, and I dare say his ceiling is higher, and he plays a more premium position than Watt.

Smith was the right selection for the Cowboys. There are several talented kids in the draft who will develop into quality NFL players but you can't have them all you make the pick and in Dallas case we choose Smith who by most accounts was one of the top players in the nation and an area of need for the Cowboys.

Man it seems like every thread now days turns into a call out thread instead of talking about the team or players. Sorry, I know it's not only you both sides of the homer/ realists do it. And if I have done it in the past a apologize to whoever it was but it is just getting old.

*Claps*

Agreed.

It got old long ago actually.

Either way, it would be nice if guys could actually talk about the topic at hand. Not every thread requires a snarky response.

Once again I can only applaud. Agreed completely.

Witten was 20 when he was drafted. TE's not a sexy pic, but he came out on fire. And, of course, Ware...is well, Ware.

Unless you're only evaluating 1st round picks?

Both were excellent picks no matter where you're taking the pick at. Great rookies who've obviously gone on to have, so far, amazing careers.

To me there isn't even a comparison. Sean Lee was a backup role player his rookie year and couldn't even stay on the field at that.

I agree with this. I love Lee but his rookie campaign was about being a role player so I wouldn't put it on the same level of Smith this year.

Some you may not agree, or you're too young to remember, but Everson Walls was pretty darn impressive as a rookie! And he was a FA!

Yes he was. Started out pretty shacky if I remember correctly but turned in an amazing year.

Why are responses like this so common here?

Because it's been allowed to go on forever at this point instead of putting a stop to it when it first started.

Dan Bailey was pretty dang good for his rookie season... and as long as this team has been looking for a reliable kicker that is nothing to sneeze at

I know we like pounding our chests like Tarzan, but I don't think anyone knows who he'll be. He's a year in. Let's give him, just like all players, 3 or 4 years and then we can crown him.

BTW, just cause you hit on a couple of guys every 4 years doesn't make you a great draft guy.

Would love signing Nicks, but hard to believe Saints would let him get away. Think they will end up resigning one way or another. But would love to get him. BTW: initially I thought we should try signing Nicks but then spend most of draft on defense; however, we might be better off drafting DeCastrol in the first round; with him and Nicks playing along side Smith & hopefully a better Free, our OL could become one of the best in NFL. Of course there is that matter of desperate need for starting C unless Kowalski could be the real deal sooner rather then later. Sure would be interesting to hear Callahan's evaluation of Kowalski & his future potential.

Know some are hoping that the young players who started this past year should be given time to develop. While I might go with Kow, am reluctant to waite for their development; if they prove to be nothing more then good backups we will again be in trouble trying to protect Romo. Too many more hits on him & maybe he won't be around longer.

Tyron is a beast. A move to LT would be nice to see. If he can become a fixture there for a decade we might be onto something.

Count me among the folks who'd like to see less antagonism on this site from both sides. And when that plea is put forth to one side versus another it's probably because they are viewed as the more reasonable audience and the most likely to pitch in and be part of the solution. The plea is absolutely wasted on many folks.

Great Cowboy rookie seasons: Yeah, Tyron, Ware, Walls. And another was Dorsett. Even though he didn't start til mid-season or so he was IMPACT from the word go. He added a dimension and elevated that team as a rookie.

Tyron Smith is clearly a great OT in development. He has the tools to be an all-time great. All that said, the past draft class looks unbelievably good. I am not sure we could have gone wrong.

Had we traded down but still got Watt or Solder no one (sane) would be complaining. If we traded up and got PP no one (sane) would be complaining. Pretty much every player we were linked to heading into the draft ended up playing well except Prince at cb and he was never under serious consideration apparently.

We made out quite well.

I have some faith in the scouts right now and am glad Tom C looks to remain in the fold.

An argument could be made for any rookie candidate, really.

As for an earlier mention, I thought we should have taken JJ Watt myself. Prince Amukamara was in the mix as well.

Impossible. I've heard it from great authorities on this forum that our scouting department once again blew it and should have taken JJ Watt.

Who also turned out to be a fine pick and we would of done great either way. Given this teams weakness and needs Smith was the right pick though.

Lets pump the brakes on LT.. Just because he had a good year at RT doesn't mean the kid is a hall of fame shoe in at LT. Plenty of guys could not handle it. Like Big Davis and Robert Gallery.. I would hate it if he failed..

...but not by much...I'd say anyone ripping Smith and saying we should have taken Watt are just looking to get your goat Hos:) .......bottom line: they were the top 2 rookies in the NFL this year, so......there ya go

He is incredibly athletic. Everything about him days LT. I'd do the move this year for sure. Especially after the season Doutlas Free just turned in.

I agree it must be a misprint Dallas is in capable of bringing in talent according to our experts here. :laugh2:

You guys are great.

I can't remember being as excited about one of our draft picks in a long time. I remember draft day thinking, "Jerry, please don't blow it. Please don't do something stupid.". I'm very happy to see that Jerry did the right thing.

That's a really bad comparison. Tryon is a physical freak. Tremendously athletic for a guy his size.

Those other two aren't in his league as an athlete.
