Ben Gardner will be unavailable this season, as he’ll undergo on the surgery on the shoulder that’s been troubling him during training camp. The Cowboys expect to place Gardner on injured reserve when they make the first roster cuts from 90 to 75.

Good! Next year he will come back bigger, stronger, faster and better than he was before. He would not have made the roster anyway based on his limited participation.

Well get healthy, learn the defense and be ready for OTAs next season. Could find a spot on the DL as he has some potential to develop into a solid rotation guy

Yup! He has talent and they could use a guy like him on this defense. He just needs to stay healthy once he recovers from surgery.

Didn't they lose Nagy to the Lions under this same scenario a few years ago?

He does not have to pass through waivers if they wait until the cut-down date. They tried to put Nagy on IR prior to the cut-down date. They might have wanted somebody to take Nagy to avoid having to pay him because they probably knew that his knee was bad. IIRC, his knee never recovered enough to attempt to play after a year with the Lions.

There was a brouhaha a couple of months before Nagy when the Giants tried to move a TE to IR and the Patriots claimed him. The Giants cried that it was an unwritten rule that other teams would do it. Belichick just gave them the finger as he does to everybody.
