The reason the Bengals CBs look so good is because of how dominant their DL was last season. The ability to get quick pressure without blitzing let's CBs play aggressively because they know that the QB can't hold the ball for long and they also know that they will have Safety help behind them because they aren't blitzing.

This is also why the Giants have seemed to have good secondary play over the years even though many of their players are not good. When they have had some injuries upfront and their DL gets blocked they get torched. I always remember that stretch in 2011 when they looked pathetic on the defensive side of the ball. Then Osi came back, Tuck got healthy and JPP took his game up a notch and they shutdown the Falcons, the Pack and Brady and win the SB again.

I will say this. I always thought Pacman played really well for us back in 2008 and it was a shame they couldn't keep him on the team for an on-field POV. He can really cover well.

Not sure what to think about Newman.

Whatever they did with him it sure looks to have worked.

They did what we couldn't most of while he was here. Get pressure on the QB so they can't expose him.

This.
Almost any group of CBs could look good with that d-line.
That line is I the top 2-3 in the league.

Part of it was probably pressure.

Part of it is probably having to play less snaps as the #3 guy.

Part of it is probably that he was playing with an injury towards the end of the year in 2011.

But part of it is apparently getting away from Dave Campo - you could always tell that Newman never seemed to get along with Campo during his second tour of duty here. I don't know if Jerome Henderson could have resurrected him but he probably wasn't as washed up as he seemed to be at the end of 2011.

What Newman isnt as bad as people think, or hes getting credit due to a good line? Either way, hes a better player than most thought.

Newman was our best cornerback since Deion. He was drafted kinda older (I think 26 as a rookie) and dealt with some injuries, but he was consistent and played at a Pro Bowl caliber every year. Like what happened with other Cowboys vets (Roy Williams the safety, Greg Ellis, Flozell, even Ratliff and Austin), people crucified him later in his career when he no longer played like he was in his mid-20s.

Better at what? He has lost his speed, and as we know, doesn't make plays on the ball. So what else is he better at?

If any of it has to do with Campo that's a horrid shame. Nearly everyone on this board knew the guy wasn't a good coach and that he had no business in the NFL.

Here's a quote from the article.

When Newman was reunited with Zimmer last season, they worked on the corners' fundamentals and were able to get him back into the same form that he showed during his younger, more productive days in Dallas.

There's absolutely no excuse for Campo to have been on the team in the first place and I think it's pretty clear as to why he was on the team. That said, if Campo played any sort of role in how Newman looked it's an organizational failure.

From what I recall when Garrett took over he wanted to replace Campo but the main guys they were after went after a DC job instead (Ray Horton). Then with Ryan on-board and unable to get Jerome Henderson released to come with him they decided to just let Campo coach another year while trying to find the long-term answer at that coaching position.

FWIW, our passing defense actually got worse under Jerome Henderson and that is despite adding Mo Claiborne and Brandon Carr but with losing Abe Elam and replacing him with Danny McCray. He was also depleted at LB for underneath coverage. But still it is not like we were any better despite two extremely high investments in the secondary. I think if we get acceptable play from Church and Matt Johnson we should be much better this year with all the other pieces now in place.

i think he had or has enough skill to compensate or could have moved to safety and worked there, tho he might have declined that, i dont know personally.

But hes far better than some we trotted out. Do i think it was wrong to let him walk, no, but hes not as bad as some people thought , especially those on the youth movement kick.

That's going to leave a mark.

Yeah, I didn't want to be the one who posted it first, but a lot of people were very wrong about Mike Zimmer.
