Cincinnati, OH (AHN) - Cincinnati Bengals safety Roy Williams has been challenging himself physically and mentally both during camps and the off-season, hoping to make a positive contribution to his 2008 down-and-out team.

A former staple of the Cowboys defense since 2002, Williams spent all but three games on the bench last season, following a broken forearm he sustained in the second game against the Eagles.

He returned four weeks later, only to re-fracture it against the Rams.

While the Cowboys offered to re-sign the five-time Pro Bowler, they complied with his request to be released from his contract.

Williams spent most of his offseason working at the Ignition Athletics Performance Group in Mason, Ohio, spending extra effort to get fit and back into the game.

His addition will bolster an already impressive defense - far more impressive than their 4-11-1 record last season would suggest.

The Bengals were 12th best in the league at harrying and slowing offenses, holding them to an average of 325.5 yards a game.

They also had to contend with their own worst enemy: the Bengals offense, which was the absolute worst of any franchise team in the league - averaging only 245.4 yards and 12.8 points a game.

That actually disappoints me that he could have stayed but wanted to leave.

I assumed he was more loyal than that.

Guess the horrible fan base was just to much for him.
