Bengals not tagging Trey Hendrickson

I don’t think Hendrickson is a good fit for the 3-4 defense.
Why? His career really took off in Cincinnati where hes played about half his snaps rushing from an OLB alignment. I'm not sure he really fits what parker is trying to do, but the 3-4 rational doesnt fit the narrative IMO.

only a football fool thinks DE is the greatest need

You could provide an argument for why it isn’t. Or you could just call me a fool I suppose.

Don’t get me wrong. I think LB, S, and CB are all needs. I just see DE as the priority. We have a guy who just had hip surgery (and still needs to improve because while he was ok last year he wasn’t anything great).

Behind him we have literally scraps. We have nothing behind him right now. DE is a major need.

CP told us he's not running the old-school 3-4, he's running 4-3 spacing and sometimes 4-2-5 etc
Being multiple I'm sure he can use a down or standing edge if he's as smart as hyped

A knock on Hendrickson is that while he’s a fantastic pass rusher he’s not just poor against the run, but will often ignore run responsibility on way to the qb.
I have not heard this at all. In fact, just the opposite, he's a strong run defender.

I don't know, Stash... keep in mind JJ Watt and Bruce Smith had HOF careers as 3-4 DEs. I know it was the old version of 3-4 but CP 3-4 will be more hybrid. Either way, If we sign him.I gotta believe CP thinks he's a fit.

Boy......I wonder if this is the - bust the budget - player Jerry is talking about.

TFL numbers don’t necessarily indicate a quality run defender. I mean no one is claiming Micah Parsons to be an elite run defender, but he has more TFLs (75) in his 5 year career than Henderson does (74) in his 9 year career.

You can rack up TFL numbers by shooting gaps and getting upfield as quick as possible. You can also give up huge gaps that give offense chunk gains this way too. These numbers often indicate a style of play more so than an overall skill level. Dlaw is typically considered one of the better run defenders in the game but is typically middle of the pack as a TFL guy

as has been proven again and again, you have to have coverage and pressure; one without the other is not going to get it done
and with the horrendous condition of both Safety and LB that means that even if we had excellent CBs which we DO NOT, it would not be a good D
get it now?

To an extent, sure I would agree with that. It seems like the Cowboys are focused on aligning the defense to fit around their interior players though. I'm skeptical they want to overhaul their defensive model to fit Hendrickson when they have massive investments in Clark/Williams/OSA who they seem to be prioritizing the defense around.
its called being creative; the best DCs figure out how to do it

We need all of them.

Also. DE is our most important need. The cowboys are going nowhere if they don’t fix the pass rush which was horrible last year.
Our secondary has no talent.
Our defensive line has some decent players.
So secondary is my primary concern.

Agreed. When we finally show that we value DTs, some of our fans want us to devalue pass rushers. No cornerback can maintain coverage if you don't get pressure, and if you have to do it every time with the blitz, you are creating holes in your coverage.

I still see pass rusher as our No. 1 need. That we also have needs at MLB, S and CB makes it tough to fill all of our needs and impossible to do it through the draft alone.
They can do it but they’ll have to be active in free agency. Can’t really count on rookie draft picks to make much of a difference early on unless you’re drafting top 5. Which is what you said so just agreeing with you.

I’d much rather sign Hendrickson and keep our picks than trade for Crosby. I’d also be okay with spending that money on multiple good players considering how many positions we need to improve at. Still, Hendrickson would fill a big hole and we could then trade down with one or even both of our first rounders depending on how the draft falls.

He’s coming off a core muscle injury so they need to do their due diligence to make sure it’s not a lingering injury.

He played in just seven games and was placed on injured reserve in December following the decision to repair a core muscle injury that he picked up later in the season and then aggravated.

I’d be very surprised.

Oh I get it. Which is why I originally stated that there’s a need at all the positions. I fail to see how the points you made prove somebody is foolish for thinking the cowboys need at DE is the greater need though. Seems reasonable to think so.

The needs are dire all over the defense. We are just arguing degrees of dire need.
