which team has had the best season in NFL history? How would you be able to determine this. What criteria would you use?
These were my questions as I designed an excel program to look at every team's individual seasons and then put them all in a single database in an attempt to rank each and every one of them from top to bottom.
I decided to rank each team based on how they compared to the other teams for that particular season. I then created a weighted formula that would use a point system in each category. This is what I decided on:
Regular season record - 30%
Playoff success - 30%
Offensive rank based on both yardage and points - 20%
Defensive rank based on both yardage and points allowed - 20%
Based on these elements here is the top ten seasons of Super Bowl era NFL (1966 to 2015)
1. 1972 Dolphins
2. 1996 Packers
3. 1989 49ers
4. 2007 Patriots
5. 1985 Bears
6. 1977 Cowboys
7. 1979 Steelers
8. 2001 Rams
9. 1999 Rams
10. 1971 Cowboys
The 1972 a Dolphins had the best seasons in history by a pretty sizable margin, they were close to perfect. They were undefeated Super Bowl Champions ranked #1 in all four categories points, yards, points allowed, yards allowed.
#2 surprised me. They were good but I didn't realize that good. They were Super Bowl champs that were #1 in three of the four categories, #5 in yardage.
Best Cowboy team was ranked #7, the 12-2 1977 team. Ranked #1 in both offensive categories, this was Tony Dorsett's rookie season and they were absolutely stacked at receiver with Drew Pearson, Tony Hill, Butch Johnson, and Golden Richards. And, of course there was Roger Staubach. Defensively they were ranked #2 in yardage allowed, #5 in points allowed.h
Top ten Cowboy Seasons:
7. 1977
10. 1971
12. 1992
14. 1978
21. 1993
22. 1995
30. 1994
88. 1970
94. 2007
97. 1973
That's a good franchise when you have ten in the top 100 considering there are 32 teams.
The best none playoff Cowboy team was 1974, the only year in the 70's that the Cowboys missed the playoffs. Overall the best none playoff season n the NFL was the Patriots 11-5 season in 2008, the season Brady was injured.
Worst team was the 1971 Buffalo Bills. Last place or 2nd to last in every category. The Cowboys worst season, 1989 was last place in only one category.
