Earlier this week, an update regarding the condition of Cowboys’ rookie LB Jaylon Smith was released; essentially stirring up fervor in the fandom and media.

As the news was not truly news at all, there should be no shock value whatsoever in the fact Smith’s return timetable is unaltered and he is still unlikely to play in 2016…as many already assumed.

I'm told #Cowboys No. 2 pick @thejaylonsmith has experienced no significant improvement in injured nerve so far. Playing 2016 seems unlikely

To which even Werder advised everyone to take a breath.

The @thejaylonsmith info was merely an update of his status. I would advise nobody overreact. (Good luck with that)

Six months removed from a horrific knee injury and awaiting the regeneration of the nerve in that knee, many people believed Smith was unlikely to play until 2017 (or beyond) regardless of his offseason progression. This pick was never actually about 2016 and the Cowboys went in with their eyes wide open.

Yay ... more high round injured players. That strategy is definitely working. I feel like we're discount shopping at Bob's Discount Furniture ding and dent pit.

Whether I'm rooting for him or not is a secret.

Hey, it won't be popular but even if he never plays a down I would still approve of the decision and would want to do it again if a top 5 talent is there in the 2nd round and your own doctors are giving you promising reports on his health.

On a positive note we could have wasted another 2nd rounder on a te instead.

Lol, I hate to say it, but there may be a day when we wish they would have selected anybody but Jaylon Smith. I hope that is not the case, but it is certainly possible.

LOL!

RS is always about getting maximum value out of the draft... He hasn't changed his stripes... He's always preached that.

And the opportunity to get a top-5 talent in the 2nd round is what it's all about in his book.

Exactly right. No team got better value in terms of talent in the first two rounds than the Cowboys.

If Smith never has the nerve to play that sucks but it wouldn't make the philosophy behind the decision wrong. It would just mean it didn't work this time. I say this realizing the vast majority of this fan base will disagree with me.

So I don't think we fully thought this through. So since he's was only a second rounder we only get four years before we either have to pony up a big contract to him or draft a replacement again. His first year is a wash. If he comes back in 2017, he will have been out of football for a year and a half. So not only will he be getting back up to football speed but he will also still be a rookie.
Jack on the other hand will play this year and the next three after that. His career could be over around then but Smith we be a FA by then anyway and due a big contract IF he made it back.
So long term....I don't see it as a great risk/reward ratio in the long term esp since the pick we used was very high and we absorb all the risk to only get probably two good years before its time for a new contract or you franchise him. Don't get me wrong, hope we hit a home run on him, but it's a risk I wouldn't have taken.

Yeah let's continue getting the thugs and dope smokers. That is working out much better.

Would you of traded our #1, #2, last 4th and last 6th for Wentz?

I understand your reasoning, but drafting injured players has not been a very good approach for this team.

What happens to the doctor if his info is wrong?

Well the other option in the 2nd round, as recent history suggests, was to take a TE that would go unused. An unused LBer isn't any worse, but the ceiling is much higher.
