CowboysZone LOYAL Fan
For somebody that does not bet on football games, can somebody explain what this actually means?

If Cowboys are 4 point favorites why is everybody betting on Green Bay to win? Isnt the line suppose to represent which team is better, so if the Cowboys are considered better than why is everybody putting money down on Green Bay to win? Shouldn't you bet money on the team that is considered better?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, I have made small bets with friends and coworkers but it is usually the loser has to wear the opposing team's jersey every day for a week or the loser has to buy the winner lunch for a week or something like that. I have never bet actual money on a football game so other than knowing that -4 means Dallas is favored by 4 points, I pretty much have no idea how all the other stuff works.
They aren't necessarily betting on Green Bay to win. The bet is that they won't lose by 4 points or more.
If, for example, Dallas wins 24-21 then those betting on Green Bay still win the bet.

Spread moved to 4.5. Probably because of the Jordy injury news

I live in Vegas, work construction and build casinos. We have a saying that locals use, no not "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," (even though it does). It's "casinos aren't built on winners." Remember that when you bet, the sports books have the sharpest gambling minds you can find making those lines and they're good at what they do.
We used to say Vegas was built on losers.

The house ultimately wins because of the vig, not being on the "right side" of bets. They do everything they can to influence an equal distribution of betting volume. Only rarely do they take a huge lump on a single game.

Vegas, of course. This aint UNICEF.

Exactly. This is why I don't pay much attention to what the public is doing as a whole.

Although the money coming for GB does not necessarily mean they think they will win outright. Just keep it within 4. Unless they are betting the money line.

Yep. My uncle always told me "Vegas didn't build all those fancy casinos because they regularly lose money". I am still in awe about how accurately they set these lines on a regular basis. I just recently started betting. And I watch the games in a different way. And it seems the line is always spot on. Also learned there is never any garbage points in sports when you are dealing with spreads and O/Us.

Vegas' goal is to get as much as possible wagered on a game while balancing out the number of bets on each side. In a perfect gambling scenario, the total dollar value would be split 50/50 on each side. Thus when the wager is settled, the money moves from the losing side to the winning side evenly with bookmakers profiting strictly on the "juice" (fees/cost to place a bet).
