An NFL policy change will bar players with convictions for domestic violence, sexual assault or weapons offenses from attending the league’s the annual scouting combine in Indianapolis.

USA Today reported Monday night that teams were informed of this policy change in a memo from NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent in late January. In the memo, Vincent wrote that players would be barred from “any league-related event” if a background check turns up a felony or misdemeanor conviction. Those players would also be prevented from attending the draft.

Players that refuse to submit to a background check will also be uninvited.

Thanks for informing us, Latin. That is the league, both taking a stance on misconduct...but puting a bite on it as well. That is being real, today.

I would like to see how the players feel about this. their dues pay his salary.

No dues yet. These are college players with no rights until they are drafted and make the team. You mess with the bull and you get the
horns.

Ridiculous. Might as well have them stand in a street corner with a scarlet letter

Get used to it. Political correctness run amok. This is going to be like every other job in society, you get into trouble no one
wants to hire you. Lots of others standing on the street corner wanting to take your place. Want to get a job in the NFL, stay out
of trouble and go to bed at night.

lol, you think the players run the league?

I say this is good for the league. Weapons and domestic violence have no place in the league. **** them.

Oh and if you have a weapons or domestic violence charge, you should be ban from CBZ. :)

I don't have a problem with this, it's convictions not charges. If the NFL want to be seen as distancing themselves from these type of antics it's fine. They have been painted as far to lenient up to three years ago.

Think how this could affect players like Noah Spence's draft position. Teams will have to focus a little harder at player Pro days an player visits.

Think the NFL finally got a policy right.

Depends on the weapons charge. Some states have crazy (some may day unconstitutional) gun laws. Of course if they have assault with a weapon or something, that's different.

Follow the law in your state or move to another state.

It's entirely time to stop coddling these football players. Any misdemeanor or felony firearm or assault conviction
should be enough to ban players from the draft or the combine. In the future, teams should be subject to penalties
for hiring a player guilty of severe crimes against society. Can't be retroactive but, make it clear that in the future
consequences will be imposed.

I'm glad you noted the difference also. It's a conviction not a charge. And it really goes beyond the NFL to college.

Young players now know that if they want to increase their chances of getting into the NFL, they can't be doing stupid stuff that ends up in a criminal conviction.

It really shouldn't affect that many athletes, though.

For one, I think this wouldn't take into account crimes committed by juveniles, as those records are generally sealed and expunged when a kid reaches the age of adulthood.

For two, I don't think there are that many college players with criminal records, relatively and comparatively speaking.

For three, it's not really going to matter much. If a college athlete is a stud like Von Miller, he doesn't have to go to the combine. A team can still work him out and draft him.

Makes sense to me. NFL has an image problem with players running afoul of the law and this is one step to hopefully curb some of that by letting potential incoming players know their actions even before they make the NFL has consequences.

I have no issue with this at all.
