Recap: Big Nate on Cowboys Offensive Line, Coaches, Detroit, Etc

I enjoy the Hanging With the Boys Podcasts when Jesse Holly is out because they usually focus exclusively on offensive line and running game with Nate leading the show. Always some good listening.

Drafting RBs in 1st Round
  • I was high on (Lions RB) Gibbs in college. Standed on table and wanted Cowboys to draft him.
  • I would draft a RB in first round. For four years, Zeke was everything for this team.
  • Jeremiyah Love is only reason I watched Notre Dame. Nonsense to not want Cowboys to draft a RB in first. Think of how many players they have drafted in the 1st who didn't make it.
  • I prefer draft picks with at least 2 years of college ball. Especially linemen and quarterbacks. Full seasons! 22 or 23 years old will hurt you in the NBA draft, but not NFL. You need grown men.
  • The more high pressure games you've played in college, the more ready you are for NFL and learn how to handle pressure.
  • I prefer smarter players that maybe have little less talent than that superstar that just can't get it together, or don't have that love for the game.
Cowboys Keep Falling Flat or Starting Slow in Big Games, Coaches
  • 90's Cowboys, we were good at 'living in the moment." Prepare for right now, this game. Coach Johnson, Troy and Michael, that was how they all approached it and put full effort into just preparing for that one game.
  • Anyone who tells you they have an answer though, they don't.
  • There are only 2 or 3 Offensive Coordinators or Defensive Coordinators in League right now who can truly take a team up a notch. It's all the players. Guys who degrade the Coaches, never had to Coach. They just talking, especially when they talk about Coaches with skins on the wall. Great equalizer is the players.
  • Eagles win had nothing to do with Coaches. It was Dak who got everyone to believe and take advantage of situation.
  • Our ST Coach has been average all year, now we in 10th, 11th game of year and he suddenly on fire? He's been same all year!
  • Changing OCs and DCs constantly hurts teams. When you get two good ones, you have something special. KC didn't stop coaching, they have 9 years of Conference Championships. Longevity. Can our team get at least one?
Pickens & Effort
  • Pickens had a bad game. It can happen to all of us. Especially ex-players who are broadcasters. Be fair. Don't turn it into something it isn't.
  • Questioning effort is like questioning manhood. Never met a player who didn't have a problem with justifiable criticism.
Cowboys Offensive Line
  • I dont watch trenches like I used to. I try to have more fun now. But I've been saying it for weeks, this offensive line needs to get healthy.
  • 90's Cowboys were very fortunate not to have a lot of injuries on line. 2 straight years of almost no major injuries. That is key with offensive linemen and getting to know the guys next to you.
  • Guyton is an athlete, but won't believe in himself. I will watch him overset guy after guy. I know he has foot speed to run a guy around horn, but he won't believe it.
  • Haven't seen much of Nate Thomas. Coaches said he was giving ground too quickly. But I'm so mad at Nate because he has too much "casual." I told the coaches this in TC. He lacks the explosiveness. Quit floating like you a Cadillac, be a Mustang, quick and fast, power impact. I remember he had mental mistake and got Dak sacked. He was looking inside and by time he realized, guy was past him outside. Could have been a safety set up to blitz and was setting himself but that's not your responsibility. Unless that guy is a yard to the line, you don't worry about him! Because it's up to Dak to see him. You gave the outside rusher a free hit at Dak.
  • We used to get a TE and WR and run loops in offseason. Make us pop our hips and get our hand around his hip. Most people panic when they turn that hip and lunge. You have to trust that Dak senses pressure and keep running with your hand on that hip and push him on past. Don't lose your feet. If you give up too quick, that defender can push back in. You have to keep pushing fast explosion so he can't get his arms up.
  • I want TE and WR running it because of their speed. Tyler Guyton has that ability! But half of our guys are hand heavy. They already falling forward because their weight over their knee. Technical things like that our linemen have to be aware of in games. Got us in Carolina, Denver, because linemen weren't playing together. Now you all together and only missing Guyton.
  • Most defenders only have one great pass rush move. The great ones have 2-3 great moves. But the average guy got that one great move and once you know it, you can always play to it based on set down distance. I let center know if I set out wide or short. If me and Tuey can whip that side we just turn direction other way. If needed. But Erik Williams was on that other side, so wasn't needed.
  • Second time this year we had same offensive line two games in row. To be where they at, and still be enthusiastic, they still trying to play. I watched them eating lunch yesterday. They're not happy where they are at. They were bouncing all over place two weeks ago. But young linemen now have a year under their belt. No more "we going to make him earn it." If that first round pick isn't out there, it's a failure. Jerry, you drafted ANOTHER 1st round guy who can't start??
Corners
  • Was watching Revel and people were saying why isn't he pressing? I don't know why they didn't put him in but saw a route where he turned around and fell down. This guy doesn't even trust his knees yet. Was back pedaling straight up. This dude needs confidence in himself.
  • Our corners, Bland is only consistent. Everyone been in and out. Not a great year for transitions for this team.
Thanks for the recap.

A lot of us here loved Gibbs coming out, he’s electric. Of course he was drafted way higher than where we were picking sooooo
Just like I’m sure we were high on Andrew Luck coming out….but not drafting #1 overall sooooo
Yeah, just some chest thumping. No different than here when someone really pimps a draft pick, and reminds everyone two years later they were the main supporter. I'm sure he meant he wanted the Cowboys to trade up.

We don’t have a mid tier QB ‍♂️ you’re probably one of those people that thinks Jalen Hurts is better lol.
If you can’t tell that our Tackles are not good, I will remember to ignore your posts
Dak is better than mid tier but not elite

I agree everything he said, Guyton had very little experience of even playing Tackle and we drafted him anyway, don't make similar mistakes with high picks again.

I noticed this. You see the obvious athleticism on one play, but in others he seems stiff and awkward. Like Nate said, could just be the result of a young guy learning the NFL on the fly returning from a major knee injury. The hope is he'll look better physically next summer. They're also asking him to do something - play zone - he hardly ever did in college.
He aint ready yet.

He should have sit at least this season to be at full health again. And then he is a rookie still. He is not the next Deion who came in from college and changed the game from day one. The guy has upside but needs reps.

Combine his injury with his need of playing time i feel bad for this guy. Nothing worse could have happened to him like being drafted by a GM who now is eager to show the world what kind of steal he has made and out of that profilic neurosis needs to throw Revel to the wolves.

I hope Revel has the intellect to understand what happens right now and has the resilence to go thru all of that.

3 more years and you are out of this trashhole. Keep the hope up little fellow!

It isn't a coincidence that they looked better against KC cause they played more press coverage. Hell, Revel was fine in that game. Eberflus just has to stop forcing his scheme on his players and play towards their strengths. A player who has rarely played zone in college, misses most of the season and you expect him to be able to play it well now?

This, looked good in press coverage and go right back to zone where they get killed at.
