From the 1970s-80s, Tatum, Lott, and Jack Lambert come to mind. Oh yhea, Donnie Shell (Pitt) and Cliff Harris.

I guess if we go back further, obviously Butkus.

I think today, RW has that reputation.

Roy and John Lynch are the first to come to mind.

As for the past Lott and Jack Tatum (until he met Earl Campbell :D) off the top of my head.

Loaded question... in my memory Jack Tatum was the nastiest hitter. He just knew how to deliver a shot.

Since then Otis Wilson, Carl Banks, Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, Wilbur Marshall, and Roy have been amongst the biggest hitters I've seen. Roy also has the freakish tendency to injure people he hits. At times LT would bring wood, but he was all about making the play and maybe getting the ball before laying down the smack.

LC Greenwood and Too Tall Jones would club people with their arms. Greenwood KO'ed Roger once with one of those shots and Too Tall shattered George Starke's helmet.

On offense Earl Campbell and Larry Cszonka were as good at hitting as any defender I can remember.

Think I am going with Chuck Cecil,I can remember head gear flying off and he was fined so manny times,I think it forced him outta the league. He could really bring the wood,What else made it nice was he didnt talk alot of smack.I also think they mad the contact on a defenseless receiver because of him.Now his carreer wasn't glorified with probowl trips, but man could he bring the wood.He was one of the only highlights you could get from a Cradinal ga,me

Steve Atwater pretty much ended Christian Okoye's career. He's got to be up there.

Today it might be either Troy Polamalu or Roy Williams.

Past, Ronnie Lott or Cliff Harris.

Safeties are usually the best hitters. That running start on a vulnerable WR.

That's interesting, I have never really thought of TP as a big hitter.

He is one terrific playmaker, and seems to be everywhere, but I don't remember him as a hitter in the class of RW.

Hollewood Henderson during his short career could really bring it.

Mel Blount hit real hard for a corner with Pitt in the 70's.

Killer Davis is as a good a ST teams hitter that you will see playing now.

Roy the Destroyer is the hardest hitter now.

Today, Roy would probably get my vote.

Previously: Lott, Andre Waters, Bill Bates, Singletary, Butkus, Cliff Harris, there are too many hitters to remember them all.

Williams isn't the impact hitter he once was. He's laid enough people out that the intimidation advantage is still there but very few cringing hits now. I think he's come to the realization that taking a chance on a big hit is still taking a chance and now just makes a routine tackle.

That's half the reason that the slow-witted think that he had a down year. They didn't see him on "Jacked Up" so he must not be very good.

The hardest hitting LB of all-time has to be Sam Huff. Scary mean.

I have seen Dick Butkus meet a big, hard charging fullback in the hole, greet him head on, stand him up in his tracks, and dump him straight over backwards and drill him into the ground.

I have seen Butkus pursue a sweep towards the sidelines, chase down the play and proceed to take the blocker, the running back, and a defensive teammate into the sidelines with him knocking over everything in his path.

Butkus could have played in the first football game ever played, or he could play now.

He was a defensive machine.
